After fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, Tommie, Beverly is attempting to create a new life for them in a small town off the beaten track. Despite their newfound freedom, Beverly is constantly on guard: she creates a fake backstory, wears a disguise around town, and buries herself in DIY projects to stave off anxiety. Difficult Subjects
Revisado: 07-24-24
I really appreciate that the author chose a subject that has a terrible stigma to it. Was able to describe the effects on the primary person, as well as the effects on their loved ones. Most importantly, amidst all the chaos that can happen, that person is person with feelings, passions, amazing talents, and people that love them.

A Must Read
Revisado: 03-06-24
The author did an amazing job of bringing to life the horrors as well as the joys these nurse's experienced. It is a story that is long over due.
So many of us have read and been able to envision what the soldiers and many of the civilians experienced during World War II. As well as what it was like in the following years.
The Vietnam War, is a time the United States would like to forget. We have not given an adequate acknowledgement to those that did serve in that war. More specifically we have never recognized the role women played in it. I had the honor to work with a nurse that served in that war. She was one of the most humble persons I've known, at the same time one of the greatest nurses I had the opportunity to learn from.
I'm grateful for the way this author brought this story to life. How it was during the war and the war they fought after they returned home.

A must read
Revisado: 01-03-22
The primary thing I loved about this book was the way the author transported me to the end of World War 2. She was able to help visualize the events, and experience the emotions the characters were experiencing: joy, when a loved one returned home; excitement and fear, as they embark on something new that they have trained and prepared for; horror, as the realization of how evil humans can become; and so many more. The author was able to do this, without going into great description of the blood and gore.
Another concept the author did a fantastic job with, was demonstrating our choices and/or actions don't affect just us, but they affect our family, friends, even the history of our nation/world.
This book is a historical romance with amazing lessons to learned.

The Good and Bad of War
Revisado: 08-01-21
This author was able to contrast how circumstances can affect people differently. She was able to give a sense of the battlefield without going into great description of the fighting and killing. This book also gives a real picture of the life long effects of war on the human soul. The author also illustrates the good in people, even in the worst circumstances.

Great Message
Revisado: 03-09-21
At times it was difficult to follow which woman they were talking about. I believe I would have followed better if I had read the book rather than doing audible. The message was fantastic, showing our decisions don't affect just us, they affect many people.

Wish I read it rather than listened to audible
Revisado: 03-07-21
The story was great. It touched on some tough subjects, abuse, infidelity, dishonesty.... and the lasting effects it can have. But most importantly on faith, forgiveness- forgiveness of others, and of ourself. I really loved how the author stressed that life is fragile, but God made it that way so we will value it more.
The narrator was great in changing voices for each character. My personal problem was I struggled with the nasal and breathy way she spoke. Listening to her, several times I wondered if she did the voices for the cartoon Rudolph and the Misfits. I also didn't feel the editors did a very good job editing the recording. All throughout the book you can hear the narrator moistening her mouth. These are the things that detracted from the book for me.

A Definite Must Read
Revisado: 02-18-21
I read this book through audible. Since discovering audible, I believe this is first book I've read/listened to in less than 24 hours since discovering audible.
In the beginning I didn't like that every other chapter changed era's, soon I understood that it was important for the flow of the book.
The author did such an amazing job ìn building the plot and bringing the reader in to the story. I don't believe a movie could be made that would do justice for this book
I recommend this book for all to read.

But all that changed the day tragedy struck her unit and took away everything she held dear. Soon after, Larkin discovers an unexpected treasure: the diary of Emily Wilson, a young woman who disguised herself as a man to fight for the Union in the Civil War. As Larkin struggles to heal, she finds herself drawn deep into Emily's life and the secrets she kept.

Story Good
Revisado: 02-03-21
The story was good, the narrator was breathy and she didn't do well with the male voices. But then how can she, when that is not natural for her. There was very little vulgar language but even 1 or 2 words are more than enough for me. Vulgarity does not enhance any story.
The author did a great job distinguishing between current and Civil War Era. She also did a great job showing the similarities between the two time periods.
