Audible kept recommending Freida McFadden so I bought several of her books. The stories are pretty good, if predictable, but her female characters are all so dumb as to be unbelievable. I’m going to move to a different author.

I preferred the older Joe Pickett books before Box became so consumed with politics. Narration was good, but at least once he substituted a wrong character’s name while reading. I had to go back and re- listen. An editor should’ve picked it up.

I’ve loved the Sigma group books — the mix of science, fiction, and action have made these books very enjoyable. However this one fell short for me. I also didn’t enjoy the narrator. The combination of his slurred, juicy-sounding words and his penchant for odd emphasis was unsettling. Add to that his way of making the Hawaiian speakers have a Mexican accent and making Kowalski sound like a mumbling thug — well he’s on my list of “never buy a book narrated by”.

Loved the book and its devious but rewarding characters. Narration was pleasant. Three more words (equal 15)

Someone must’ve once told this author that using similes in her writing is useful. Then someone else must’ve told her you can never have too much of a good thing. Then someone else story line was interesting. The style grates. As does the narrator’s tendency to put emphasis on the wrong word(s) in a sentence.

It was unsophisticated and maybe written for young people. The narrator was excellent and that was enough for me.

I loved the premise of this book. The concept and situation were realistic and well described. However the writing is pretty simplistic. The dialog is awkward and the characters are just cardboard.

I appreciated the book’s method of handling an ugly issue. Yes, it was a little preachy at times, but I grew up in the north in the 60’s and needed the reminder and hard education. I suspect things were probably even worse than described here. I highly recommend this book

If you like books that portray women as weak and emotional creatures who make unbelievably stupid decisions about love, then this book might be for you. I can sort of forgive the grandmother, Vivian, whose story we hear in pieces, for her poor choice in an abusive marriage since she was brought up in a verbally abusive household during WW2. But I can’t give the same forbearance to her daughter who is self centered and lacks the ability to forge a lasting relationship with a man and who betrays her own daughter. And then there’s the daughter, Elise, a modern woman who should know better, but who makes her own self-absorbed choices and ruins lives around her. The author tries to dress her up and make her sympathetic. She cares about immigrants and became a widow even before she was married. But that does nothing to dispel her own selfish actions. This book sets back all the work done by strong, independent, and truly caring women over the last 80 years.

The narrator’s attempt at midwestern accents was a failure. She has a pleasant voice and reads well, but makes men should like Gomer Pyle.

Good story. Coban did not disappoint. First rate narrator. Unbeatable combination. Looking forward to the next
