Beautiful reflection on a life in theater, tv, and film
Revisado: 03-04-24
I really enjoyed this book. It’s an especial treat listening to Stewart narrate his own life. Fans will enjoy the back stories to his theater, tv, and film work. I especially loved hearing about how Stewart channeled his father when playing Leontes (A Winter’s Tale) and Macbeth. I believe he is honest about his life’s failings, many I had not heard off before, such as his being a bit of a bully as a child and his multiple marriages. He had a tough childhood, growing up in rough Northern England with an alcoholic and abusive father. Yet, he came through the experience as a compassionate, hard working, thoughtful, and inquisitive professional devoted to a life of theater. Highly recommended.

Historia
For Titus and his friends, it started out like any ordinary trip to the moon - a chance to party during spring break and play with some stupid low-grav at the Ricochet Lounge. But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires.

Timely story effectively dramatized
Revisado: 07-20-23
Really enjoyed this. World building is inventive, convincing, and humorous. Early scenes reminded me of a YA version of Brett Easton Ellis in the best way. After having established the world the second half becomes increasingly somber as the facade of what the novel portrayed as its SF world is lifted revealing what is left of our own endangered world. I was crying by the end.

I grew up in the 90s and assumed I knew this story. Hemmer is very useful in positioning her stories within the wider historical context, showing where the 90s deviated away from 80s conservative politics and towards the partisan politics of the present.

Powerful and accessible, A History of America in Ten Strikes challenges all of our contemporary assumptions around labor, unions, and American workers. In this brilliant book, labor historian Erik Loomis recounts ten critical workers’ strikes in American labor history that everyone needs to know about (and then provides an annotated list of the 150 most important moments in American labor history in the appendix).

as someone just getting interested in the labor movement I found this a useful introduction. I recently listened to the Richard White history of the Reconstruction and Gilded Age, which was VERY good and I think a worthy companion to this book.

Historia
At the end of the Civil War the leaders and citizens of the victorious North envisioned the country's future as a free-labor republic, with a homogenous citizenry, both Black and White. The South and West were to be reconstructed in the image of the North. Thirty years later Americans occupied an unimagined world. The unity that the Civil War supposedly secured had proved ephemeral. The country was larger, richer, and more extensive but also more diverse.

Historia
With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy was thought to be absolute. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. But we now know this to be premature. Authoritarianism first returned in Russia, as Putin developed a political system dedicated solely to the consolidation and exercise of power. In the last six years, it has creeped from east to west as nationalism inflames Europe, abetted by Russian propaganda and cyberwarfare.

this was exactly the book I needed. it not only clarified and put together some of the information I had heard in the news, mostly regarding Russian influence over US politics, but also painted an important picture of where these motivations came from, using Russians activities o
in Ukraine as illustration. I was expecting something more like an essay, which is more of the second part. I was surprised and delighted by the rich history I received in addition to the grounding ideas. both are essential bulwark against tyranny.
