loved the story and the narrator was *chef's kiss. my only complaint is that I wish we'd seen more of life after solving the problem. glad I continued the Married to Magic world as this one was worlds better than the first.

not your standard "viewing myth only" lectures

one of the better series of lectures from the Great Courses. The professor is knowledgeable and explores the polytheistic way of life of Greek and Rome fairly well while also being quite entertaining. This was worth my time, and I appreciate the work.

Historia
Smart, sassy, and unapologetically feminine, In Praise of Difficult Women is an ode to the bold and charismatic women of modern history. Karen Karbo spotlights the spirited rule breakers who charted their way with little regard for expectations: Amelia Earhart, Helen Gurley Brown, Edie Sedgwick, and Shonda Rhimes, among others. Their lives provide inspiration and instruction for the new age of feminism we have entered. Karbo distills these lessons with wit and humor, examining the universal themes that connect us to each of these mesmerizing personalities today.

Great narration, lackluster book
Revisado: 11-30-22
Of all the difficulty women to choose, some of the worst examples have been chose. Moreso, there is not much time spent on why these women’s work and accomplishments were so important tofuture generations. Lastly, how much time must be spent on husbands and affairs? I feel this book has promise but drops the ball in potential. Many things could have been done differently to have a better effect and impact
Narrator was lovely though and the premise and topic itself is fine as well.

Historia
The mysticism and fairy folklore of Celtic England, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Brittany, and Wales is explored in this production, which focuses on interviews conducted with everyday citizens about their beliefs, sightings, and encounters in the early 20th century, followed by an anthropological examination of evidence. It is an exploration of the spirit world, of the Sidhe, the "good people", who are claimed to interact mischievously with the populace - sometimes even abducting them and leaving only the victims' clothes behind, transporting them far distances, and killing livestock.

Hidden gem
Revisado: 11-14-22
I don’t leave reviews often but I feel this calls for one. Books filled with Celtic folklore are a dime a dozen but it’s not everyday you stumble upon a book filled with interviews of everyday people and their experiences, especially from 100+ years ago. Absolutely worth a listen, imo

Really in-depth and entertaining look at the all common but not too well known copperhead. Style of the podcast and interviewing makes it’s both interesting and easy enough to follow with kids around too.

the only thing that could've made this better is if Cory himself narrated it :) I'm really glad I picked it up for a listen as it really was enjoyable although I think I'll still want a physical copy to stick some bookmarks and sticky notes into.

Revisado: 05-02-21
I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner as there's far better books out there sadly. This one fell short to me with a small amount of actual misinformation and glossing over things that should've had more time spent on them. The narrator however was lovely 💖

Quick and fun fairy tale vibes
Revisado: 06-08-20
I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving this review.
First let me talk about the narrator: he has a good voice but I think he'd be much better suited for a different setting or genre. His voice and style didn't pull me into the story at all really, I had to focus on listening and never really felt "pulled in" by it. I'd listen to him again, just not for fantasy/fiction imo.
The actual story though? After getting pasty beginning issues of tuning in, I wound up really enjoying it. I actually disliked the main character Sterlig(spelling?) at first - I couldn't take him seriously. But he kind of grows on you and I actually didn't see the ending coming so that was a happy surprise. The writing is also just descriptive and pretty on its own as well if that makes sense.
I hadn't read or listened to anything from this author before and while it's much shorter than most things I consume, I think I'll definitely look for other works by her when I'm wanting something quicker.

Overall Great start to the series
Revisado: 06-05-20
First I want to point out this is a YA book meant for teens and I'm a 24 year old. So of course, I found a lot of Celaena's actions annoying and was shouting "why are you like this" a few times in my head but it makes sense. She's a teenager and none of it was bad enough to make me stop listening. I think most of the flaws I found in here can be forgiven with this in mind.
I also really wasn't a fan of the flip-flopping she did for Dorian and Chaol. I've never been particularly fond of love triangles but there never really seemed to be a good reason for this one - she just couldn't make up her mind for awhile, keep dealing with feelings for both of them, then ended things with the first for no real reason to me? She wanted to be free but she knew this from the start so it just seemed a bit odd. To sum it up, the entirety of the whole love triangle just felt odd and unnecessary to me the entire time. I read ACOTAR first and enjoyed that love triangle and relationships actually - but not this one from TOG. ACOTARs seems more fleshed out and substantial - TOGs just seems to exist and actually detracts from the story.
Rambling on, I LOVE the narrator! I couldn't imagine anyone else doing the series. I always like books with strong female protagonist and I think we have that here and I really actually enjoy how Celaena enjoys feminine clothing etc. It's a nice change of pace from the more "I'm a strong female protagonist so of course I HATE all that girly shit" trope that seems more popular. Outside of the romance, the story itself is very interesting. I loved the world building and ended the book just wanting more of everything. Naturally, I'm on book 4 as I'm writing this review 😆
To sum it up, it has flaws but it's still terrific for anyone looking for this specific blend of fantasy with female protagonists and romance and a little gritty.

Great Banter Between Characters, Okay Story
Revisado: 06-05-20
Whitney and Torstens back and fourth MAKE THE BOOK and the banter only gets even better once Sora joins them. The dialogue alone makes it worth listening to IMO. The narrator does an excellent job with these voices and his regular narrator voice is awesome too - my only criticism is all the generic people who only get a couple lines of dialogue sound very, very dumb and identical.
As for the story itself, I enjoy the premise - a thief steals a crown on a drunken dare and winds up on a good and proper quest with a knight. Unfortunately, it doesn't really seem to pick up for me until near the end however and I found Queen Oleander to be annoying throughout the book. I felt terrible for her and her backstory but her incompetence seemed a bit much
Overall, worth the listen - book 2 is better so far too
