Historia
The rulers’ mistakes are paid for with the blood of the people. This is shown in history both recent and ancient, time and time again. It was no different for an Austrian mountain farmer’s son who was thrown into the carnage of the Eastern Front. He was in the prime of his youth, and the German Reich was already close to losing the war. In ripe-old age, he remembers those dark hours that have haunted him throughout his life.

Intriguing and gripping story.

I enjoyed this personal account very much. No BS, just straight forward storytelling how it was and what the landser did. Well worth the monthly Audible credit.

Historia
From age 15 to 40, David Hackworth devoted himself to the US Army and fast became a living legend. In 1971, however, he appeared on television to decry the doomed war effort in Vietnam. With About Face, he has written what many Vietnam veterans have called the most important book of their generation.

The 40 hours flew by!
Revisado: 04-13-23
I was a bit overwhelmed when o saw this was 40 hours long but it went by so fast.
I found the story fascinating and the narration excellent with no pronunciation errors.
As a 30 year army veteran (1990 - 2000), I was amazed at the relevancy of Hack’s candid opinions even to today’s army and even to the CSS element to served my time with.
Well worth the money and time to listen to this.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Certainly, a great read. However, I could not get over the narrator’s voice for the female characters.

Historia
The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

The best personal account of WWII

I have read many personal accounts of WWII veterans. This by far is the most gripping and well-written.

Historia
December 1944: Deep in the Ardennes forest, a platoon of 18 men under the command of 20-year-old lieutenant Lyle Bouck huddle in their foxholes. Under attack and vastly outnumbered, they repulse three German assaults in a fierce day-long battle, killing more than 500 Germans. Only when Bouck's men run out of ammunition do they surrender. As POWs, Bouck's platoon experience an ordeal far worse than combat: trigger-happy German guards, Allied bombing raids, and a daily ration of thin soup. Somehow, the men of Bouck's platoon all miraculously survive.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

When I discovered this title, I thought how can you write an entire book on one ten-minute incident. WelI, I was surprised and enjoy the entire story. It is very well written and narrated. Any WWII buff would enjoy this account of Charlie and Franz.

Historia
Of the 30 million who fought in the eastern front of World War II, 8 million died, driven forward in suicidal charges, shattered by German shells and tanks. They were the men and women of the Red Army, a ragtag mass of soldiers who confronted Europe's most lethal fighting force and by 1945 had defeated it. Sixty years have passed since their epic triumph, but the heart and mind of Ivan - as the ordinary Russian soldier was called-remain a mystery. We know something about how the soldiers died, but nearly nothing about how they lived, how they saw the world, or why they fought.

Revisado: 01-03-21
Bring a 30 year Army veteran, I have read many military history books. Most have been on the US Civil War and WWII.
This was my first book on the Ost Front from a Soviet perspective and I was not disappointed. Firstly, the narration is excellent. Secondly, and most important, so is the writing. It gives a truly fascinating and insightful view of the Red Army at all levels. It is well worth your time to read this.

Historia
In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, a small detachment of British airborne troops stormed the German defense forces and paved the way for the Allied invasion of Europe. Pegasus Bridge was the first engagement of D-day, the turning point of World War II. This gripping account of it by acclaimed author Stephen Ambrose brings to life a daring mission so crucial that, had it been unsuccessful, the entire Normandy invasion might have failed.

I enjoyed listening to this and did so on the tail of listening to Panzer Commander which I did enjoy much more.
It is not a keeper in my Audible library but worth a listen.
As a 30 year US Army veteran, it annoyed me that the narrator kept pronouncing platoon as “plat tune”.
