Historia
Whilst searching a windswept mountainside for the fabled ghost moth fungus, a young Tibetan boy unearths a mysterious relic. Moments later the People’s Liberation Army of China marches into his isolated village in the valley below and begins to dismantle an ancient way of life. As the brutal oppression grows, the boy’s precious find becomes first a symbol of hope for the villagers then a tool of survival for a people and a religion. It must be preserved at all costs.

Just a quick compliment
Revisado: 04-19-23
I really love both books by the author. The summit is more exciting but ghost moths is probably a better story... blah, at any rate both are great and when I figured out the writer did his own narration I was honestly surprised. Most of the time when an author does the narration it's horrible and barely worth listening to but this dude excels at it.
I don't climb mountains or have any desire too, but I get an idea of the passion and commitment the author has to it from the writing. It makes me wish I did have an interest in it honestly.
oh, and the reference to the zen of motorcycle repair definitely sold me on being a fan. I never met anyone who read that book that I didn't get along with.
thanks!

i love the series but the dramatized stuff...
Revisado: 02-10-20
the dramatization just doesnt work for me. :/ the story is as good as the others and its worth listening too... but sometimes i just want to cringe. this series could make an amazing series for tv or probably ok as movies.... but as a radio style drama... well its like all other radio style dramas... lots of banging noises, weird music at weird times and acting that just doesnt suit the mood of the book. not a fan of dramatized audio books. huge fan of rc bray and the beer can.

really loved this book.
Revisado: 09-07-18
as soon as the narrator started talking I was like "oh crap... how annoying is that guys voice going to be?"
but he actually grew on me and I loved the performance. . and the writing.
the ending.... well,... I feel like it stole a chapter out of a cheesy 30 minute sitcom to try and convince me to buy the next one in the series and failed. sorry. no.... I probably would have bought the next one if you hadn't felt the need to end this book so obviously baiting me into the next one. Now I wont just based on principal.

Revisado: 07-22-18
as stated... it tries to be clever and humorous but it didnt work for me. I felt like I was listening to a bad Monty python knockoff. the reader did great though. ... the story and writing just... meh.

Historia
In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

loved this story.... spoilers.. it's worth a read
Revisado: 06-13-18
my only complaint... and its minor... is the "end of the world" stuff through the middle. yeah I get the idea a nazi on Everest first would have been a big deal and would be used to further the skin head movement.... but I think they pushed that aspect too hard and made it seem sort of silly before they let it go.
aside from that. loved it.

Revisado: 01-19-18
it's okay... the young girl character drove me insane. it puts her age at 11, but she thinks more like a seven year old and acts like a 17 year old. missed the mark with that one.
aside from that... it's a decent read, though the narrator style wasn't my favorite.

What forces molded the universe? Are those forces still at work, removing, changing, or adding heavenly bodies even as we gaze upward? Will humanity, and Earth itself, one day be gone? Are we alone? In an era when science journalism is perhaps more thorough and ambitious than ever before, fascinating explorations of questions like these seem available to us almost every day - provided we have a working understanding of the scientific theories on which they're based.

I loved this. :) I already have a decent understanding of chemistry and most of these subjects, some little more than a lose grasp of understanding and others more advanced, I still loved it. I learned new things, increased my understanding of others, and smiled several times listening to Doc Neil talk about something he is obviously passionate about. makes me wanna turn back the clock to the Nova science now days.
good stuff.

Thomas McNulty, having fled the Great Famine in Ireland and now barely 17 years old, signs up for the US Army in the 1850s and with his brother in arms, John Cole, goes to fight in the Indian Wars - against the Sioux and the Yurok - and, ultimately, in the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in. Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language.

good book but....
Revisado: 08-01-17
the performance makes this book better. it is perfect. the book is ok, love the writing style, a little less impressed with glossing over, what I am sure, major life decisions and the struggles of coming to terms with that. in 2017 people struggle for years before they can accept who they are, or should have been, and the character in this book treats it like "well, I put my red shirt on today, but I wanted to wear the blue one."
aside from that it's a good story well written and again the performance is great. it's extremely well read.

What a douchebag...
Revisado: 07-07-16
I love the story, but the main character is such a pompous ass it really takes away from it. maybe it's just the way the narrator is reading it. :/
anyway, worth a read and I'll get the second one just because the story is imaginative and believable for sci-fi.
