Historia
The Serenity crew head to Yell City, one of the settlements on Abel, a moon in the Rim. Their job: track down the killers of a local lawyer shot dead in the streets by a local gang. Their client is Annie Roberts, the eighteen-year-old daughter of the murdered man. Lucky for them, Annie Roberts is more than capable of handling herself. Unlucky for them, the job is lot more complicated than they at first think it is. Annie’s father is not just the victim of local gang violence but also the target of some powerful men.

Passable story, but ruined by external perspective
Revisado: 11-21-24
Annie's character is a spoiled rich teenage with no perspective on life or the people living around her. I don't care about her side of the story, or how she feels about the crew of serenity. She throws her weight around for most of the story until she realizes why the crew is awesome. I understand the need to provide a foil for Mal, but this character distracts from the main story. She feels like a character representing the author injected into the firefly universe. I feel like you could cut her whole side of the book and narration without losing anything. Potentially, this took away from character development or insight into the main crew, the people I've invested a movie, a tv series and eight books into.
IMO you can skip this book.

Historia
The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Great setting, but all conversations are arguments
Revisado: 04-10-23
I enjoyed the setting and content of this book, but my main issue was that it felt like every conversation between two characters was an argument. It felt like creating a book where explosive arguments was the motivation for the book. I understand the motivation and dynamics between the characters, but all nuance is lost when all they can do is scream at each other and storm out.

Simon cleans up the crew's havoc
Revisado: 01-11-23
The firefly series fills in the gaps between the episodes. Each book usually focused on a single character and their journey. While this book tells a piece of Simon's tale, it also zooms in on each of the crew and their role creating havoc that he unknowingly cleans up. I really enjoyed seeing each character in their element, and the team-ups. It felt more like an episode than a character focused short novel.

slow till 17hrs, then brilliant finish
Revisado: 09-18-13
Any additional comments?
Picked this book up due to Hugo and Nebula awards. The story's concept is brilliant and the author does a great job explaining the world and describing the situation from the main characters. It could just be my perspective, but the first 17 hours of the book seem to drag on as she builds on the setting. There's an event that happens and everything comes together as you ride out the rest of the book. The last 9 hours of the book makes this a classic, but you could almost skip through the first 17 with a paragraph worth of summarization.

Historia
When Rigg and his friends crossed the Wall between the only world they knew and a world they could not imagine, he hoped he was leading them to safety. But the dangers in this new wallfold are more difficult to see. Rigg, Umbo, and Param know that they cannot trust the expendable, Vadesh - a machine shaped like a human, created to deceive - but they are no longer certain that they can even trust one another. But they will have little choice.

overly repetitive, but a good overall story
Revisado: 08-09-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There's a lot of repetition in the book. Most chapters seem to have constant recaps of information you've already taken in. Not sure if that was a purposeful part of the writing process or just filler. The repetition really distracted me from the flow of the book. Initially I liked the process of exploring other character's perspectives on the situation but it quickly got old.
Would you recommend Ruins to your friends? Why or why not?
Tentatively. The concept doesn't his a broad audience, but those who like the genre would like the story.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The different narrators add a lot to shifting the perspective of the book, but there's definitely a difference in quality between the three of them.
Any additional comments?
The overall story is good, and i'm invested in finding out what happens. This is more of a if there's nothing else to read book for me.
