A really distressing book
Revisado: 12-30-22
This isn’t a book I would recommend, because it felt so disheartening and upsetting all the way through the end. However, it does evoke a lot of emotion and really makes you think about/evaluate how the child welfare system is run. The school in the book acts as a hyperbolic metaphor, making a point. But the devaluation and dehumanization of mothers involved in the foster care system, as demonstrated throughout the book, is ~not~ exaggerated. And seeing the damaging impact that has on the mother (and then inevitably the child) is devastating. Hence the the book being quite upsetting.
The book does make a lot of strong, important points about unrealistic (and harmful) expectations set for parents, the disregard for cultural factors, the stigmatization of mental health, racial disparities and discrimination, and so much more. It rightfully highlights that change is necessary.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Historia
If you’re wondering if God can truly move in the life of someone with all the odds stacked against her, look no further than Tori Hope Petersen. Tori grew up in the foster care system, a bi-racial child in a confusing and volatile world. Growing up with a mentally ill mother and living in twelve different foster homes, nothing was in her favor. And yet, even with a miniscule chance of graduating college and a great risk of being homeless, jobless, and on drugs, Tori overcame every negative stereotype that attacked her. However, Tori will tell you she did not overcome. Christ did.

Powerful and courageous. Take heed and let it impact you.
Revisado: 11-13-22
It can be tempting/easy to ignore the brokenness around us, because it can make us feel overwhelmed and helpless. But by staying naive and ignoring to what is going on- specifically in the foster care system, is absolutely detrimental. Tori has a gift. Listen to her words and take heed. This book is a must read.
Tori courageously shares her story with brave vulnerability that opens your eyes to deep pain and brokenness, but more that that, she sheds light on the HOPE we have and in the power of healing.
This book sheds light into the experience of foster youth, biological parents, foster parents, agency workers, schools, siblings, and so much more. She speaks about each experience in way that is REAL and doesn’t hold back, yet also holds deep empathy for all involved.
Tori is a testimony of the power of Christs love and his body. Love heals. Please read this book and sit with it, let it change you.
