I read this book to learn more about the political perspectives of the presumptive GOP presidential candidate. Hoping to hear a doctrine and tone more reminiscent of Reagan, I was disappointed by DeSantis’ strong Libertarian leanings, and self-congratulatory hubris. Politically conservative readers like myself should continue seeking a more nuanced electable candidate.

Surprisingly Relevant

As a history buff, I expected - and discovered - many new glimpses into the characters of our Revolutionary Period. But it was as a political buff, I was surprised to read of the tension and open conflict between the political elite and political populism whose divergent worldviews continue to divide our national culture today.

Excellent and Chilling

Having grown up during the American exceptionalism of the 20th century, I found Karl’s book to be an excellent, and chillingly accurate, narrative describing how quickly the greatest democracy in world history could be threatened to its very core during the single term of a narcissistic presidential despot. Based upon documented factual evidence and the recorded statements of the actual players themselves, the book portrays the roles of real life political heroes and villains that no work of fiction could match in audacity. Beyond Trump and his true believers, it is a documentary of both those who have placed their political ambitions ahead of the republic as well as those who heroically stepped into the political gap to prevent Trump’s worst inclinations from destroying the American experiment for his own ego. As a life long Republican, it was a tough read to see what has happened to the party of Reagan in one generation. Hopefully books like this will serve as an alarm to restore honor, principle and civility to our political institutions before America is irreversibly destroyed from within.

Good Book, Good Man

Regardless of one’s political leanings, one can only read this book and come away with a respect for the public service and personal integrity of Joe Biden. His painful journey, while serving as Vice President, through the illness and death of his son is heart-wrenching and inspiring. Written before his presidency, this book is the story of a good man.

An Honest Perspective

Woodward’s pedigree as an objective journalist of straightforward integrity showed throughout this excellent book. The ongoing conflict between Trump’s own words and provided facts made for a sometimes troubling read as one ponders the power and influence of the world’s most powerful leader.

Exceptionally Insightful

This is a must read for an accurate perspective of America’s resilience to the predictability of human nature. Rather than view the current political culture as a degeneration from that of a politically united band of founding fathers, viewing our nation’s first post-Revolution decades through the lens of history confirms the necessary messiness of allowing constitutional ambiguity to define our political process. Men’s views and ambitions have always clashed, but the Union perseveres.

Holders of either secular and religious views would both do well to read this book. Using words and deeds ranging from the Founding Fathers through those of modern thinkers, a convincing case is presented for the genius of our Constitution in preserving to all both freedom of and from religion in our lives and public discourse.
