Not Your Typical Zombies

I'm a huge fan of post apocalyptic fiction so I've listened to and read quite a few books in the genre. The premise of this one is definitely different from the norm. On one hand it feels like a more realistic scenario regarding recently reanimated dead in that they still retain some tiny bits of their memories from before the outbreak, at least for the first little while. On the other hand, the author has gone way out into sci-fi land with the apparent leader of the zombies and the things she can do. Is this a bad thing? No. I find it intriguing and am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

That said, I did feel like the overall mood of the story was a bit darker than I was expecting and had to pause it a few times and return to it later. And yet, there's a lot of really good, well timed humor in this story as well, and somehow the author does it without making light of the horrible situations the characters find themselves in.

I loved it.

These are great additions to the series. My only beef is that the author jumps 6 years ahead in the last book, something I hate, but it was easy to get caught up with the survivors stories. But the author also takes us back a few decades to when Titus Rush, Dr. Bus, and the other survivalists originally designed and built the shelters. We finally meet Maybank (possibly wrong spelling) and get the story of his oil rig shelter from his point of view. It's fun "living" vicariously in these awesome structures through the eyes of the survivers. We see what's happened on the rig the events over the last 6 years as well. And we find out that the infected dead aren't done destroying humanity, not by a long shot.

How Can Such A Disturbing Plot Be So Entertaining?

I don't know how the author managed to write such a disturbing, gruesome story in a way that didn't leave me feeling depressed afterwards, but he did it. I truly didn't expect to enjoy this prequel novela but, to my surprise, I found myself hooked from the very beginning. Between the intriguing plot, the easily likeable characters with entertaining interactions (especially amongst the Marines), the skillful narration, and the unexpected twists to a normally worn out genre, I found it difficult to set aside. Despite my original expectations, I'm looking forward to continuing with the series.

Anyone who has daydreamed about what they would build if they had limitless funds and were tasked with creating the strongest, safest, most secure emergency bunker possible will likely enjoy this series. While that aspect of this series is not realistic for most people (ie anyone who isn't a high ranking politician and/or a billionaire), it's fun to live vicariously through the characters as they make one such bunker their home.

Fortunately, these people aren't content to just stay locked in their amazing bunker and ignore the rest of the world as it's taken over by a vicious zombie plague. They are determined to do whatever they can to fight back against the plague sweeping the world, turning people into mindless, walking infected dead. The main characters are also fun, easy to like, well thought out, and have great sense of humor. The well-timed, good natured ragging on each other reminds me of interactions between my dad and uncles, something that makes me enjoy the story even more.

As for the plot, I was hooked pretty much from the very first sentence and haven't been able to resist any chance to continue listening to the story. The narration has been spot on and I can't imagine anyone better for this series.

Great Series

First of all, I am glad someone wrote a book series involving zombies that still found a way to include God and have the characters not only not lose their faith in the face of seemingly impossible odds, but grow in it. It's odd to say it, but this series helped me with mine and for that I'm grateful.

Secondly, the series was well written and pulled me in right away. Rich, detailed characters that were easy to like, which made it difficult when someone was killed off.

Third: unlike most authors, this author does not shy away from killing off main characters which only added another element of suspense for me. You just never know which main character is going to be killed off next or whether the zombies or the bad guys will get to them first.

Finally, the narration was perfect.

Like the first two books in this series and the Trackers series that came beforehand, I really enjoyed this book. And like the aforementioned books I found myself hooked on this story from the first page. There were moments where I felt frustrated and moments where I was royalty p*ssed off at the decisions the people in power made, but the moments of triumph and joy more than made up for it. While I selfishly wish there were more books in this series, I'm happy with the way the series ended and wouldn't want to mess that up.

The narration was awesome. Bronson Pinchot did a great job as usual. 😃

As book 2 of the follow up series to Trackers, it really feels like this is part of original series except that the US is a bit farther along in the recovery process, there's a new, additional crisis in the form of a highly contagious and highly fatal plague sweeping across the New Frontier, and, instead of "General" Phoenix and his merry band of racists and murders we now have Eddie and his much larger, much more deadly Rattlesnakes militia.

Seriously, if you thought "General" Phoenix was bad, he was basically a feral kitten compared to Eddie. This guy has managed to take over a very large portion of the New Frontier and turn every town, village, and encampment into soldiers fighting for his cause. He uses false rumors, lies, promises, and deadly force to turn all of these people against the US government, making them believe that the volunteers that go out trying to save lives and curtail the spread of Wildfire are the enemy. His goal is to take over the New Frontier, killing or evicting anyone who represents the US or it's foreign allies.

‼️(WARNING: there may be a few minor spoilers below so if you want to avoid them, please stop here.) ‼️

It's working all too well, too, especially given the amount of people he's recruited to his army and the mind boggling number of military grade weapons he's managed to amass. And then there's Eddie's brilliant head for strategy, which is where the "frustrating" part of my review title comes in. How many times will Lyndsey, Raven, and their allies fall for Eddie's misdirection and distractions while he destroys the heck out of everything and everyone they're desperately trying to protect? And why oh WHY do these people keep letting him slip out from under their fingers??

Yes, I've been yelling at these inanimate characters for the last half of the book. My family probably thinks I've gone nuts! Fortunately they put up with me, especially since I'm now diving into book 3 and there will probably be more yelling in the very near future. 😅

PS: I feel bad for always putting this at the very end of my reviews but the narration was fantastic. Bronson Pinchot doesn't just speak the words, he portrays the feelings behind them as if the actual characters were speaking instead of a narrator, making the dialogue that much more captivating.

The first time I tried to listen to this book I only made it a few chapters in before I gave up due to frustration over some of the co-MC's choices. Eventually I gave it another go, however, and this time I stuck it out, quickly becoming hooked. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the characters grew and adapted as their naive world views were challenged. I really enjoyed Wyatt, a man Jack meets on his way home to Baltimore, and the close friendship they developed over the months it took to get home. Some of the injuries and situations Jack survives reeeaally strain credulity, lol, but I was too happy that he was still alive to care all that much.

I loved the narration. Travis Baldtree is one of the best!

Good Trackers Series Follow-up

Despite the title of my review you don't have to have read or listened to The Trackers series in order to enjoy this book. However, there are some major spoilers for that series in this one so if you plan to listen to it at some point, I'd recommend doing so before you dive in to this one.

This was another one of those books where once I started it, it was very hard to put down. At the start of the book, it's been 2 years since the North Korean attack and some major progress has been made - electricity is back in many areas and some food and medicine is finally reaching most of the larger population areas via freight trains - but that progress is being threatened by another anarchist/terrorist group. After yet another major attack on an important railway that results in the loss of not only lives but important cargo as well, Raven and Creek are sent out to help track down the culprits and put a stop to them.

At the same time, there's another crisis brewing: clinics all over Colorado have begun receiving people displaying the symptoms of a previously unknown, highly lethal strain of the plague. It isn't anything anyone has seen before and not even the top virologists in the country can find a way to treat it. As more and more cases of the mystery illness appear, it quickly becomes apparent that it's spreading like wildfire and if they can't put a stop to it - and fast! - it could spell disaster for all of humanity.

This latter scenario is one that I've worried about for years (COVID-19 definitely didn't help) so I quickly became invested in the characters' fight to figure out where this mystery illness came from and how to stop it. It certainly didn't hurt that the author writes in such an engaging way and creates characters that are realistic and likeable.

I'm already diving into the next book to see what happens next.

Great Series, Totally Hooked

This series pulled me in quickly and kept me riveted throughout. I loved the characters -- the good guys, that is -- and found myself rooting hard as they went up against some seriously evil mofos. One thing of note is that Nicholas Sansbury Smith doesn't shy away from killing off main characters that he's already spent some time developing, which I both liked - it was unexpected and made the story more realistic - and disliked when it was one of the good guys.

The overall feeling of this story is not as depressing as some in this genre and didn't leave me feeling melancholy. There are no zombies or variants (see Extinction Cycle series). Instead, there are some badass heroes and truly twisted villains, some great battle scenes, welcome moments of levity, and an overarching sense of hope.

I immediately recognized the narrator from the John Matherson series as well as a few others I've listened to. Overall, I think he did a great job. 5 out of 5 stars from me.
