Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

Historia
Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days."

Ironic Meta Irony
Revisado: 02-27-24
I cannot wait to see the movie adaptation, American Fiction, but fear it cannot match the novel but I have great hope. This novel tells the story of a story of a story of another story for rotations of reality and non/reality. Probably a requirement of all art. The social comment here is damning of popular culture and the general way people see things through gross generalizations looking for evidence of what is already placed in one’s consciousness. A real thinking person novel with interesting and hilarious use of narrative.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

This is the Story-Blow-by-Blow
Revisado: 07-20-23
Important to remember how bad things were, what was done to try to stop it and to be reminded of how far we have to go to fulfill the dream. MLK was a visionary and a brave leader, worts and all. Eig’s writing style is engaging, as well as riveting. You cannot read this without being moved.

Beautifully written true story of how even imperfect love and circumstances can create an incredible success story
Revisado: 07-06-23
A story that could only be told by a creative and gifted fiction writer is actually a true story recounted by the person that lived the incredible story and with a happy ending. Another story where fact is stranger than fiction and shows how love is the only engine of survival.

For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Historia
Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Important
Revisado: 12-04-22
Understanding cultural differences cannot be underestimated. America (and probably all nations) have infused biblical understanding by its own cultural underpinnings. Biblical translation is imperative to understand. Take “me” out of the equation in scripture broadens one’s understanding. An excellent book on the importance of what scripture can mean vs what is it says.

Don’t Panic Yet
Revisado: 04-18-22
Having been fortunate enough to receive a liberal arts education including the study of economics & political science, much of the underlying information included in this book was already known to me. However, the historical cycles & quantitative numbers for each of the strength/weakness categories were not. Unfortunately, just looking at the quantitative analysis does not give a clear picture of the future of the U.S. China has known these factors for 40 years and have manipulated the calculus of their economy accordingly in their very controlled economy. Watch “Why China Will Not Become the Dominant Power in Asia” created by the Australian National University. The simple answer of why China should not scare you is the unsustainable labor force and it’s inability to control its economic growth in the future. Although Dalio is correct in his (and my) concern about U.S. internal strife, he say’s nothing about China’s, which is real & will play a major part in its economic future. But, nonetheless, Dalio has written a great book!

Historia
In 1945, the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong, 5,000 nuclear-tipped missiles, and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward, the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the 20th century.

Better be Russian
Revisado: 03-17-22
Only a Russian could fully follow this story. Chocked full of facts and told from a specific (Andropov) point of view, I doubt the need for naming every actor on the stage helps in understanding the history. And this “history” has a heavy dose of opinion.

Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation between Simon, Gladwell, and Gladwell’s oldest friend and co-writer, journalist and Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the conversation flows from Simon’s music, to his childhood in Queens, NY, to his frequent collaborators including Art Garfunkel and the nature of creativity itself.

Paul Simon Intersective
Revisado: 01-15-22
The best explanation of an artist and his work. Done in the now famous and compelling style of Malcolm Gladwell. Anyone interested in how an artist produced their art will appreciate the depth and authenticity of the voluminous and well thought out body of Paul Simons work. Done in a way that captures the process (or non-process) that is that canon of Paul Simon’s production over 65 years. Any aspiring singer-songwriter must listen to this audiobook.

Walter Isaacson sires has a way about his subjects!
Revisado: 01-04-22
I like everything about how blended Prsonal stories with high-level subject’s not commonly addressed in the popular press. My only complaint is that some I could tell when he staying something of his thoughts or quoting one of his subjects. This problem may be limited to the audio version but did take anything from it. I think I have read all his other book and hopes he just about to finish one on crypto currency!
