Great story, poor pronunciation. The narrator.
Stephen Graybill‘s misunderstanding of how to pronounce plural words is very distracting from what is otherwise, a fascinating book.

Like other men in his family, RFK, Jr, is wonderfully articulate and a great raconteur. However, the narrator, with his poor understanding of how to pronounce basic words such as “Barnstable,” all but totally ruined the Audible version.

It would have been nice to have even an introduction by RFK, Jr.

Despite his spasmodic dysphonia, I would rather listen to him any day of the week.

As a former proofreader, my ears bristled when I heard the author (who has a beautiful voice by the way) mispronounce the word, “dawdle”and the name for the river Seine. The title irked as well since the book has very little to do with divulging aboriginal wisdom as per the author’s promise not to. I tired of her frequently “bursting into tears”over being widowed. I wondered where was the gratitude for getting to spend so much time with an extraordinary man who had healed her from a deadly disease? And yet….tucked into this long tale of romantic ecstasy and woe were generous seeds of inspiration and truth. Perhaps the most profound example was how she was encouraged to let go of her own tale of injury of how she contracted hepatitis C as a young mother as well as the pain of losing the man she loved and instead learn to see everything -even negative experiences- as a gift and an opportunity to learn.

One thing that struck me as really unusual was the near lack of any mention at all of their respective children and how their healing practices affected their relationships with their offspring for better or, for worse.

My American ears being so unaccustomed to this particular English accent, it was not until the second go round of this audiobook that I really felt my own heart opening to the author.

I was glad I gave it a second listen as her tale becomes more nuanced, outrageous and heartbreaking.

I was surprised by the great sympathy she was able to illicit from this patriot.

The only negative in the production was the introduction by a young (American) woman who irritatingly mispronounces the word “written“ and instead says in what almost sounds like a fake cockney accent, “wri’EN.” Cringe, indeed.

Kimberly Farr as the main narrator, did an excellent job. However, Hilton Al’s forward does an injustice.
His more-bored-than-thou molasses intonation is as dull as Didion’s writing is perceptive. So, do yourself a favor and skip it.

After being saturated with the stories of Ernest Hemingway in high school by male teachers who offered the writings of suicidal women as fair barter for the neurological real estate in our young, impressionable minds, I took great pains to avoid it thereafter.

What we received for every completed Hemingway novel were a few poems by Anne Sexton or Sylvia Plath which hardly comprises any kind of reciprocity or even sound judgment.

Didion has done the remarkable in one very personal regard: she has made me curious about Hemingway, specifically, “Hills Like White Elephants.”

Isn’t that indicative of her true generosity; the fact that she makes her reader more curious?

I never thought that a book about moss could be riveting but Kimmerer, with her sonorous and silky intonation, supplies a compelling narrative that is as engaging as it is heartbreaking.
However, she does not leave us in the mud but elevates us by sharing her appreciation and scientific knowledge so that we might all know better and do better. Five stars is not enough for this author and this audiobook.

Excellent content, weirdly produced. The narrator would change the tone of her voice when quoting others. This made it feel very much as if she was reading a bedtime story along the lines of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One wonders: What is this her idea orwas she encouraged to do this by some

Basically the entire book could have been about one page.
It’s been sitting with the last 4 hrs unread because it just doesn’t go anywhere.

I got the book because I wanted to get to know Tom Brady and I have really learned nearly nothing about him, what is important to him, what makes him laugh, what mistakes he has made, what lessons he has learned.

As for the TB12 method it sounds great for anyone who can afford to have a personal trainer massage them while they work out. Yeah, thanks for that Tom.

For anyone who is not in the same financial ballpark but wishes to have similar results as far as lengthening muscle groups to prevent injury, there is always yoga which anyone can do inexpensively at home with a book or video.

If you’re looking to get any idea about what Tom Brady is like as a man, as a father, as a friend, you won’t find it here.

Not a tell-all, DH sometimes leaves a little too much out. I kept hoping she would talk about why she never married or had children. A long exposition and the only dull part of the whole book -the chapter on opposable thumbs - would not be required-just the truth, short and sweet.

Also looking forward, what does she still hope to do?

There is one scene which I won’t spoil by talking about it but it is haunting and harrowing and I did wonder about whether she reported it to the police and if not, what her thoughts are on the subject.

DH is the coolest most beautiful and talented big sister to many young women who grew up in her wake.

Unlike another female musical performer who shall remain nameless (because that will drive her crazy) DH never came off as a nasty unkind snarky insecure B.

DH remains dedicated not to the aggrandizement of her own ego but to art! and music and yes- to a great sense of humor and love.

Writing this book was a huge act of generosity. To share with all of us who feel like we know her but really don’t, for all of us who admire and take so much inspiration from her insatiable curiosity and the way she developed her talent I can only say: Thank You, DH for giving us as many details and anecdotes as you have.

We await volume 2 and all future creative endeavors.

Hosseini call tell a story I’ll give him that. He knows how to keep you in suspense while he deftly hopscotches between scenes. But the main character is cowardly and cruel. If this is Pashtun culture if this is what we Americans are to accept as Afghani then I say: really? Because it is coarse and mean and downright brutal. I could not find one redeemable aspect to the main character. I would rather not have to deal with middle eastern or Islamic cultures at all and this prejudice of mine is what led me to give this book a try. It reinforced all my beliefs. I was hoping that there would be something that would have enlightened my narrow thinking about how women and children fare in such cultures. But this story was utterly grotesque. If one child rape wasn’t enough in this book, Hosseini gives us another: just ghastly.

It is storytelling-by-trauma. Personally I am sick of this bs excuse for progressing a narrative. Using brutality towards women and children so a male protagonist can step up and be a hero: just another piss-poor fantasy for weak men to latch onto.

With The Kite Runner Hosseini has created one more dark ugly spot in the world.
