Historia
As a child, Jory Fleming was wracked by uncontrollable tantrums, had no tolerance for people, and couldn’t manage the outside world. Slightly more than a decade later, he was bound for England, selected to attend one of the world’s premier universities. How to Be Human explores life amid a world constructed for neurotypical brains when yours is not. But the miracle of this book is that instead of dwelling on Jory’s limitations, those who inhabit the neurotypical world will begin to better understand their own.

good book
Revisado: 11-04-22
I wish the beginning somewhere had a chapter from his mom about the child hood he doesn't remember. I wish he didn't refer to neurotypicals (NT)as "normal" people (they aren't lol). and he said about trees in the uk being there before the US existed. the US existed before it was colonized by Europeans. natives have been living there, we need to work on fixing the wyt washed history narrative. other than those things I really liked his book. I love hearing about life from my fellow autistics. I like the way he described being empathetic from a logical perspective. I definitely find that true for many autistics. people seem to think we are not empathetic but I often think we tend to be more empathetic then our NT counterparts

Historia
Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn’t “look” autistic. But, as he’s quick to point out in this memoir, autism “looks” different for just about everyone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Historia
Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits, an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes, had earned him the label "social deviant". No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

needs an update
Revisado: 10-01-22
I wish he would do an update of this book. Autism is just autism now. no more aspergers dx. I wish he would drop the aspergian superiority, were all just autistic. also functioning lables are harmful. we all function differently day to day. functioning lables harm all autistics. as an autistic myself , I really relate to this book and I think many autistics would. I just hate the notion that it's asbergers is the good kind of autism, yuck

good but dated
Revisado: 09-05-22
it was a good book but can tell it's dated but the ideas, oralism, and autism. it seems like her ideas changed over time though. and it is often a very sweet story. I found myself smiling many times of the cute stores she tells.

audist, oralist, and ableist
Revisado: 09-04-22
I thought this was just going to be a great story about a Deaf kid growing up. instead it was just his parents being audist, oralist, and ableist. God forbid their child is different. it sounds like he didn't even want to call his son Deaf, but his son asked him to. they put him thru thousands of hours of speech therapy because they wanted to force him to speak. this book made me so angry. they didn't want their son to learn ASL. I'm glad in the end their son decided to take asl college courses and the family accepted it but he should have never been kept from it

Historia
In 1959, the year Terry Galloway turned nine, the voices of everyone she loved began to disappear. No one yet knew that an experimental antibiotic given to her mother had wreaked havoc on her fetal nervous system, eventually causing her to go deaf. As a self-proclaimed "child freak," she acted out her fury with her boxy hearing aids and Coke-bottle glasses by faking her own drowning at a camp for crippled children
