Both a captivating narrative and a book of environmental and historical significance, American Buffalo tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

Awesome, and finally read in the right voice
Revisado: 08-26-19
This book is great. It’s a good mix of history and real life adventure that I think just about anyone would enjoy. I don’t hunt. I fish quite a bit, but hunting isn’t something I’ve had much opportunity to get into. That being said, I find most of Steven Rinella’s work pretty darn interesting. I tried and tried to get through the older version of this audiobook, but it just didn’t sound right. The idea that anyone anywhere thought it’d be a good plan to have someone other than Rinella read this book is ridiculous. Hopefully they’re able to get the audio version of Meateater straightened out soon too.

"One of the best acid tests of an introductory book...is that the text allows the reader to learn an important skill independent of the illustrations. Fly casting is very difficult to teach in person, and even more so in print, yet this book contains the best, the most interesting, and the most effective introduction to fly casting I have ever read."

Great overview!
Revisado: 07-13-19
As a novice fly fisherman I found the tips in this audiobook to be very helpful. The narrator did a really good job too. I’m sure I’ll go back and listen again a few more times.

Historia
First published in 1949 and praised in the New York Times Book Review as "full of beauty and vigor and bite", A Sand County Almanac combines some of the finest nature writing since Thoreau with an outspoken and highly ethical regard for America's relationship to the land. This classic work remains as relevant today as it was nearly 70 years ago.

Who hired the narrator?
Revisado: 05-21-19
This is a beautiful book that I think everyone should read, but the narrator of this audio version is absolutely horrendous.

Historia
In March 1997, 39 people in Rancho Santa Fe, California, ritually terminated their lives. To outsiders, it was a mass suicide. To insiders, it was a graduation. Benjamin Zeller not only explores the question of why the members of Heaven's Gate committed ritual suicides, but interrogates the origin and evolution of the religion, its appeal, and its practices. By tracking the development of the history, social structure, and worldview of Heaven's Gate, Zeller shows that the movement was both a reflection and a microcosm of larger American culture.

It’s an ok listen
Revisado: 05-21-19
This is an interesting book with a very uninteresting narrator. It sounds like it’s being read by a newscaster.
That being said, the author treats the subject matter seriously and respectfully. He does an excellent job of showing how the belief system of Heaven’s Gate fits within popular culture.
