DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION
Revisado: 05-12-21
There is a version on Audible without the background sounds and it is so much better.
The background sounds are a fine idea I suppose and can even see how it might help with the immersion. When it is done right.
Sadly this audio book is not done right, there are several times during this book where you will struggle to make out what the narrator is saying, especially in dramatic moments when the music gets louder.
As for the story itself, it's a slow burn but I enjoyed it fine enough. This story won't give you Sanderson levels of action, but it will give you a host of characters who - with the exception of the very clearly evil antagonists - feel refreshingly real.
The narration is fine but not perfect. His different voices are excellent, but there are a few times where he gives off the wrong emotion, for example the text may state that a character says something angrily, but the narrator speaks the words as if surprised or scared. It doesn't happen often, but it does cost him a star.
I recommend the book and the series - but go get the other version!

Historia
When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Good story, suffers from bad protagonist voice
Revisado: 08-20-20
This was a very enjoyable listen. There are obvious parallels to be drawn to the Dresden books, but Alex is so far a much more appealing protagonist. The story is not more complex than it needs to be and the plot keeps you engaged throughout.
The one thing that drags this down is unfortunately the narrators choice of voice for the main character.
Alex is a 6'1, bourbon drinking, cigarette smoking man in his 30s, but he sounds like a 15 year old who's voice is yet to fully develop. It simply doesn't fit the character.
It's a shame too, because the narrator, Mr Mignogna, is very talented and clearly capable of more rugged sounding voices since he applies it to other characters in the book.
If the second book in the series releases in audio format I'd certainly consider it, but I strongly suggest for Mr Mignogna to re-consider his 'Alex'.
