Historia
Gemma Summers is unlucky in love. She's known it since third grade, when her first crush blew a spitball into her hair, and a decade-long string of bad dates, boring sex, and abysmal morning afters has done nothing to improve her prospects. But when a random radio call-in contest lands her courtside tickets to the hottest playoff game of the season, Gemma's luck may finally be on the upswing, even if it doesn't exactly seem like it when the dreaded Jumbotron kiss cam lands on her and her date.

Horrible
Revisado: 10-02-24
A screechy, yelling narrator with ridiculous protagonist who whines a lot and a high-handed romantic interest.

I wanted to like it...
Revisado: 11-25-23
The premise of the book is a good idea but as I listened to more and more of the story it became very clear that it is merely a facade. The author took the first Hercule Poirot mystery by Agatha Christie, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and tweeked it to her needs. She introduces a female protagonist who has just as many abilities as the great Poirot, yet she seems to acquire them in a miraculously short period of time and amazingly, has a photographic memory.
I'm all for the amazing investigator who has propensities for solving puzzles none can understand but I need to at least be able to believe it a little bit.
This story felt far too slip-shod to be believed, in large part as it wasn't her own work. And that, is the true crime.
I will not be reading more of this author.

Historia
A reluctant ex-spy with demons of her own, Elinor finds herself facing down one of the most dangerous organized crime gangs in London, ultimately exposing corruption from Scotland Yard to the highest levels of government. The private, quiet “Miss White" as Elinor is known, lives in a village in rural Kent, England, and to her fellow villagers seems something of an enigma. Well she might, as Elinor occupies a "grace and favor" property, a rare privilege offered to faithful servants of the Crown for services to the nation.

Great workup, disappointing resolution.
Revisado: 04-05-23
Fantastic character and background. Loved learning about La Dame Blanche, however it felt very rushed at the end. I couldn't help but feel that the protagonist would've acted differently, considering her knowledge and skills, and that the ending wouldn't have been so simple and pleasant.
The narration is sublime. I just wish the ending had all the"bite" of the story.

Good, but not the author's best work.
Revisado: 06-29-22
I love the characters and the narration is always enjoyable, but i was expecting a more detailed and innovative story. The reasoning was boring, not going to give it away, but I felt it was a flimsy, overdone excuse that seemed half baked. The banter between characters was enjoyable as always, it just felt as if the author HAD to come with another book and so used the oldest motive in the world to explain the murders.
Mrs H and Flo deserve better.

Story great, Narrator is too
Revisado: 07-24-21
I've loved all of this series so far and this one is just another excellent piece.
I would like to add that while there are plenty of reviews bemoaning the choice of narrator, I thought she did wonderfully. Mia Chiaramonte is an American and Lucy Raynor is Welsh, that being said I would hazard a guess that Lucy Raynor would be able to do the accents needed for the various characters much more accurately. The only complaint I had was that Daisy's room mate Lucy needed to sound more subdued, as fitting her personality. Other than that, I thought it was spiffing!

I think the headline says it all. I thought, "The author is just gonna touch on this subject for them but that's all...that's all right?... Right?!?".
Nope.
I had to stop it and remove from my library. It felt dirty and gross to me now.
The Narrator is pretty good, though I had to wonder why the young pregnant girl has a southern accent when she isn't a transplant to California. Scenarios were a bit far fetched too.

Implausible but good narration
Revisado: 08-26-20
I don't need a complex storyline but I can't stand it when people are just placed like chess pieces with depth or background. Add to that a main character who just waltzes through life making decisions with a flip of the coin, literally. If that's not enough to be distasteful, she is dallying with one brother while fantasizing about the other, smacks of cheating. Grow up. Ugh.

The history of magic is as long as time and as wide as the world. In every culture, in every age, in every place and, probably, in every heart, there is magic. Harry Potter: A History of Magic reveals some of the hidden stories behind real-world magic and explores some of J.K. Rowling's magical inventions alongside their folkloric, cultural and historical forebears.

Sound is frustrating, interesting subjects
Revisado: 03-14-20
The subject materiel is interesting but it's not a Harry Potter story, just a book about how some of the ideas in HP are real and based in Muggle Magic.
My only problem really is in the sound quality. Ms. Dormer is an excellent narrator but while her voice and those of others are easy to hear, others are more soft spoken so it can be hard to hear them. In particular, there is a gentleman who tends to whistle his S's, which I found distracting. This was complicated by the fact that he has the softest voice, so you turn it up to hear him and then get blasted with whistling S's.

Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.
