Feel good story
Revisado: 06-13-24
This was a feel-good story for those of us who have already come of age. Easy to follow along with so you can knit while listening. And just enough suspense to stay interested

Not for horse lovers
Revisado: 04-26-24
should have had a content warning for anyone who loves horses or animals in general. it's a good story but I can't stand animals being killed for no good reason. As a horse person the descriptions of their deaths was horrendous.

Historia
Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

loud sound effects
Revisado: 01-05-24
the story and performance was great. I'm not sure why another reviewer talked about overdone tropes. I thought it was original and interesting. with an unexpected ending.
my only complaint is the high pitch noise between chapters. I'd turn the volume up to hear quiet conversations then blow my eardrums out during the high pitched sound effects.

Historia
Recently engaged and deeply ensconced in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, Emily Hartford gets a shock when she is called home to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she fled a decade ago after the death of her mother. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has had a massive heart attack. At the hospital, she finds her father in near total denial of the seriousness of his condition. He insists that the best thing Emily can do to help him is to take on the autopsy of a senator's teen daughter whose sudden, unexplained death has just rocked the sleepy town.

Predictable storyline
Revisado: 12-23-23
The story was just good enough make me finish it. but the storyline is predictable, murder mystery meets Hallmark. The author obviously isn't familiar with the horse world though. or how controlled substances are handled by vets. If youre not a horse person you might not care about the inaccuracies but if you're part of the horse world there will be lots of eye rolling.
I wish the story was about one chapter longer, so it could have had a nicer ending. not sure if it's set up for a sequel. if it is I doubt I'll read it.
I did like the narrator though.

creative but irritating
Revisado: 06-29-23
This didn't seem very similar to Bone White, not really what I expected.
The monsters were creative, not anything that's been done a million times. But a lot of the characters were really annoying.
Would it be too much to ask that once in a while the annoying ones die and the smart ones live?
I only finished this book out of spite. and because im not a quitter.

ugly and beautiful story.
Revisado: 04-29-23
This story is full of oppression, rape, abuse, miscarriage, abortion and trauma. But I think while hughlighting the very real problems women have grappled with for millenia, it also has threads of hope for a better future. Theres just enough whimsey and beauty of nature to lighten the heavy topics. And three stories of women finding their own strength.

Slow start, good story
Revisado: 12-28-22
The narrator is really good (although sometimes certain parts were startlingly loud)
The story is slow to start. And the end is obviously meant poised for another book, there was no actual ending.
But once i was into it it was a good listen.

Did I miss the trigger warning?
Revisado: 11-06-22
I'm not a terribly sensitive person. But this should have come with a trigger warning for pregnancy and miscarriage. And the toxic characters were also distressing. I rarely return books but this one got returned.

Not my favorite.
Revisado: 10-25-22
This story wasn't as centered around Native American culture as previous books, and that was a big part of what I liked about the others. It also didn't have as tidy an ending as the others. It was left pretty open ended.

In an air-conditioned university office, a man lies dead, brutally bludgeoned. A hundred miles away, in the high, arid New Mexico mountain country that Sheriff Cliff Lansing is sworn to protect, an animal is devastating ranchers' livestock, and is now turning to human prey.... For Lansing, the two cases are linked. The murder victim was part of an archaeological dig, and a local Indian believes that the animal killings have been unleashed by the excavations.

playback issues
Revisado: 10-21-22
The story is as enjoyable as all the others from this author but there is a playback issue between chapters, towards the end of the book the pause between chapters gets longer and longer and then the beginning sentence of the next chapter gets cut off more and more. not enough that I couldn't follow the story but it was annoying.
