Historia
Matsutake is the most valuable mushroom in the world - and a weed that grows in human-disturbed forests across the northern hemisphere. Through its ability to nurture trees, matsutake helps forests to grow in daunting places. It is also an edible delicacy in Japan, where it sometimes commands astronomical prices. In all its contradictions, matsutake offers insights into areas far beyond just mushrooms and addresses a crucial question: what manages to live in the ruins we have made?

Fascinating subject, frustrating presentation
Revisado: 01-24-22
I love Matsutake and am concerned about climate change and rampant capitalism but found this book frustratingly dull. I give it three stars for the subject alone. I hope there will be a better book one day that showcases the wonder of Matsutake and the struggle for balance between human endeavors and environmental preservation.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

save 32 hours and 24 minutes of your life
Revisado: 09-04-18
Starts out interesting but goes downhill quickly and stays there. Thirty two hours and 14 minutes of uninteresting drug trips, suicidal rantings and bad behavior. Waited for main character to actually do something instead of have everything just happen to him. The plot had too many lucky chances to be believable. The book tries to redeem itself in the last 10 minutes. Good message in those last 10 minutes that the main character(and the author) tries to use to explain the point of the story and why he is a hero. Nope. Too late. Maybe if you listen to the last 10 minutes first it will have more resonance.
The writing style is interesting, but the best part of the book was the research. The history of paintings and the world of the antiques and restoration was intriguing. The narrator was very good, though a touch cartoony.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Revisado: 01-11-17
Utterly blown away. It's still January but it would be safe to say that this book will be one of the best books I'll read this year. Difficult and painful at times, beautiful and funny at others, Noah's story is made that much richer with the author's narration. Raw yet always hopeful, this story is a testament to the strength of a mother's love and the determination of Noah to overcome all obstacles. what an incredible life!

Historia
In this brilliant portrait of the oceans' unlikely hero, H. Bruce Franklin shows how menhaden have shaped America's national-and natural-history, and why reckless overfishing now threatens their place in both. Since Native Americans began using menhaden as fertilizer, this amazing fish has greased the wheels of U.S. agriculture and industry.

a most important book on the most important fish
Revisado: 06-17-13
What made the experience of listening to Most Important Fish in the Sea the most enjoyable?
great information about how overfishing one species could so greatly affect a local ecosystem which, in turn, affects the world
It took a bit of time to get used to the slow, scratchy voiced, and sometimes muffled narration, but the author is passionate and very well informed and I ended up really enjoying this book and narration. There is alot of great history presented on this little known(at least on the West Coast) fish and the tales of its abundance in earlier years is jaw dropping. Fascinating information about how long it has taken before man realized and was willing to do something to reverse the effects of overfishing. If fishing a species is going to destroy the ecosystem and deplete things to the point where we are endangering ourselves, then we can no longer "self regulate" fish catches and government(or an international fish conservancy commission) intervention is necessary.
You cannot leave it up to a corporation because their interests are short term and based on profits. It is amazing and disheartening to know that for this one species it comes down to ONE corporation! I hope the menhaden do not go the way of the passenger pigeon.
What other book might you compare Most Important Fish in the Sea to and why?
Four Fish by Paul Greenberg. Both are great books. Cod by Mike Kurlasky as well.
Which character – as performed by Bruce H. Franklin – was your favorite?
himself
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was appalled at how human thoughtlessness can devastate the balance of nature so easily. We're killing ourselves through our own selfishness. That must be Mother Nature's failsafe to keep us from irrevocably destroying the natural world. We will destroy ourselves first.
Any additional comments?
thank you Mr Franklin for writing this book.

Historia
Our relationship with the ocean is undergoing a profound transformation. Just three decades ago nearly everything we ate from the sea was wild. Today rampant overfishing and an unprecedented biotech revolution have brought us to a point where wild and farmed fish occupy equal parts of a complex and confusing marketplace.

entertaining informative book on overfishing
Revisado: 06-17-13
Would you listen to Four Fish again? Why?
yes, and I have. There is so much information here and written in an entertaining way that I enjoyed listening to it several times. The narration was very good.
What did you like best about this story?
it made me aware and made me think about the amount of fish that is taken from the seas and rivers every day. I wonder how it will affect the amount of food available for the future if we do not change our ways and think about sustainability....
I loved to learn about animals and their behaviors etc and this book did not disappoint.
What does Christopher Lane bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
his personal life and how it is intertwined with fishing
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Can 4 fish survive with help from the very same species set out to destroy them ?
Any additional comments?
would love to read more from this author

Historia
When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn.

Austen+Stevenson=perfect
Revisado: 03-22-13
Would you listen to Northanger Abbey again? Why?
yes. Juliet Stevenson makes this story come alive. The best audio book narrator I have heard so far. Austen, of course, is classic and the duo makes for a great evening of entertainment
What was one of the most memorable moments of Northanger Abbey?
the way Austen writes--so entertaining. The protagonist didn't appear to flavor things with a gothic eye until she reaches Northanger Abbey so it is a bit confusing...as if the first part of the story is a different character. Still, it all pulls together with typical Austen magic. If you like Emma, you'll like Northanger Abbey
Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
thi is my first listen to her narrration and I am now noting books she reads so I can listen
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
it's a light read about young love with a very imaginative heroine. She's kinda silly like Emma....sweet
