Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

An illuminating reflexion on racism
Revisado: 08-09-23
Isabel Wilkerson revealed herself as a clear mind to display a well researched and consistent reality of racism to all of us who struggle understanding the extremely difficult life of people who are marginalized because of the ambiguous definition of race. This book is a masterpiece, full of documented historic events of the harsh reality of racism upon which USA supported its development to world power, although she shows that cast is an intricated cultural, political and historic enterprise.
I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in US history.

In 1994 Professor Bryan Sykes, a leading world authority on DNA and human evolution, was called in to examine the frozen remains of a man trapped in glacial ice in northern Italy. News of both the Ice Man's discovery and his age, which was put at over 5,000 years, fascinated scientists and newspapers throughout the world. But what made Sykes's story particularly revelatory was his successful identification of a genetic descendant of the Ice Man, a woman living in Great Britain today. How was Sykes able to locate a living relative?

The secrets of Mithocondrial DNA
Revisado: 07-06-23
An illuminating story about inheritance of mitochondrial DNA and how this is different from nuclear DNA. It is fascinating to learn that by understanding some properties of mitochondrial DNA, it is possible to track human origins, and human migrations through tens of thousands of years. Carbon dating and mastering of the sea by Polynesians travelers throughout the infinite Pacific Ocean complement this incredible history of humans.

Historia
Modern diseases and viruses have been spurred anew by war and conflict as well as shifting poverty, urbanization, climate change, and a new troubling anti-science/anti-vaccination outlook. From such 21st-century forces, we have seen declines in previous global health gains, with sharp increases in vaccine-preventable and neglected diseases. International vaccine scientist and tropical disease and coronavirus expert Peter J. Hotez, MD, PhD, argues that we can - and must - rely on vaccine diplomacy to address this new world order in disease and global health.

Fantastic overview on viruses, health and disease
Revisado: 07-30-22
This book by Juan Fueyo is written with much knowledge, perspective and erudition that intersects in many places with the general knowledge of anyone interested in science, the current concepts on the COVID-19 pandemic and the appreciation for a well though and well written book. In truth, this book is much more than the history of the viruses, as it is from its origins, its role in evolution as well as their essential roles in health and disease, illustrated with many amazing, related facts that range from the Cosmos to the discovery of America and the way how ignorance and poor decisions of our leaders can take us to an undesirable future. I am not sure if I should call this a nail-biting opus, since I couldn’t stop listening through the end of this fantastic audiobook.
This book if complemented by the reference to classic books, authors and scientific articles that now align a list of readings for my own endeavors in understanding life and the world we live in, as Professor Fueyo has announced. Congratulations Professor Fueyo.
Finally, although this review is in English, I really listened to the audiobook in Spanish. I would like to encourage the Editors of this book/audiobook to get a translated version, that will be a gift for the English-speaking audience.

Historia
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was discovered in 1964. At the time, the very idea of a virus underlying a cancer was revolutionary. Cancer is, after all, not catching. Even now, the idea of a virus causing cancer surprises many people. But Epstein-Barr, named after its discoverers, Sir Anthony Epstein and Dr Yvonne Barr, is fascinating for other reasons, too. Almost everyone carries it, yet it is only under certain circumstances that it produces disease.

Renaissance of the Epstein-Barr Virus
Revisado: 01-15-22
This is a fascinating and comprehensive review on EBV, from its discovery when researchers were looking for a causal relation with Burkitt’s lymphoma to supporting evidence that the virus can cause a specific disease such infectious mononucleosis, to its role in causing lymphomas in patients undergoing immunosuppression, and its postulated role in multiple sclerosis.
I highly recommend this book to scientists, medical students and doctors trying to understand mechanisms of disease, those willing to have a broader view of the virus, and those like myself who are trying to look for inspiration for future research.

Fantastic introduction to immunology
Revisado: 11-21-21
In this book the author provides an excellent overview of our immune system. The review is thorough and exposes the many concepts that are the foundation of immunology without delving into the many confusing names of cytokines, receptors, pathways that scientists, health professionals and physicians have to deal in their professions. I highly recommend this book to any student or professional interested in trying to understand the immune response, and how to apply for understanding diseases.

David Fajgenbaum, a former Georgetown quarterback, was nicknamed the Beast in medical school, where he was also known for his unmatched mental stamina. But things changed dramatically when he began suffering from inexplicable fatigue. In a matter of weeks, his organs were failing and he was read his last rites. Doctors were baffled by his condition, which they had yet to even diagnose. Floating in and out of consciousness, Fajgenbaum prayed for a second chance, the equivalent of a dramatic play to second the game into overtime.

Inspiring experience of a young physician
Revisado: 05-21-20
Dr. David Fajgenbaum narrates his experience of suffering multicentric Castleman’s disease, a usually life threatening disease. Initially affected as a college student, he found out that his disease was of unknown origin and there wasn’t a cure for it. So he set himself in a mission to find the cause and a cure for Castleman’s disease. After several years and 5 near-death relapses, he found out that a monoclonal antibody used as immunomodulator in patients with kidney transplant could make a difference for some patients with his disease. So after meticulous analysis of patients reported win the medical literature, he narrowed to a medication used as immune suppression agent. Therefore, he asked his doctors to try the old medicament in him for his disease, in a category of use as off-label, and achieved complete remission for more than 5 years now.
Dr. David Fajgenbaum endured severe side-effects of chemotherapy for every relapse of disease, while working and chairing the Castleman’s disease network, an international consortium of patients, advocacy, doctors and scientists that has been making fundamental groundwork in the diagnosis, therapy and research of Castleman’s disease.
While having many resources at hand, Dr. Fajgenbaum has been able to build from scratch a model for studying and treating patients with the designation of “orphan diseases” those diseases which are too rare to appeal widespread interest among health care professionals.

Historia

Fascinant and historic document brought to life
Revisado: 12-03-19
Vargas Llosa inspiration to select historic events and bring them to life is incomparable and at the same time provocative to discuss the good and bad in the life of people who were protagonists on unheard events. I am now strongly motivated to learn more of “caucho” and it’s role in the history of El Congo and from the early republic years from Perú.
