Historia
London, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers, the group includes Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France.

Intriguing
Revisado: 02-15-25
Five real, brilliant, female, mystery authors showing what women are capable of. Fascinating thought processes in unraveling a real murder. Important message about don’t mess with women! Benedict’s best book yet. I did this as an audiobook and loved the accents.

Historia
After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust - in ghettos, on death marches, and in concentration camps - a young couple seeks refuge in Canada. They settle into a new life, certain that the terrors of their past are behind them. They build themselves a cozy little cottage on a lake in Muskoka, a cottage that becomes emblematic of their victory over the Nazis. The charming retreat is a safe haven, a refuge from haunted memories. That is, until a single act of unspeakable violence defiles their sanctuary.

The Holocaust, murder, family love
Revisado: 12-26-24
The Crate is a well-written (and well-narrated), compassionate, heart wrenching, true story of a brutal murder in a lake community near Toronto, while at the same time, uncovering the history of the author’s parents’ experiences as Hungarian Holocaust survivors. I envision this as an excellent book for one of my book groups.

Timely, heart wrenching novel about woman’s biological rights
Revisado: 10-03-24
The book about what Canadian women underwent before abortions were legal, when their babies were stolen from them to be sold by the church, has shocking relevance to what is happening in the U.S. right now. As many of our states are slashing women’s rights, I wish every female voter would read this incredible book, preferably before our impending election.

Loved this book
Revisado: 02-27-23
I normally don’t use audiobooks, but I fell in love with May and was horrified by what her family did. I have family in San Francisco. Chinese family. It was hard and interesting, at the same time, to read about the quake of 1906. And it’s sad that the Chinese were given so little respect.
