Historia
Here is Edward Rutherfurd's classic novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning 2,000 years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through the ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of half-a-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the 20th century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the world.

A Wonderful Book
Revisado: 02-07-25
This was a wonderful book. I strayed from my normal fare of military sci fi and fantasy to revisit historical fiction. From the reviews I chose Rutherfurd's seminal work and found it extremely entertaining and absorbing. Teaming that with Wincott's narration and you have and immersive and enjoyable experience. Don't be daunted by 50 hours of listening... it is well worth it.

Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

The Military SciFi Standard
Revisado: 11-30-24
I first read Heinlein's classic in high school almost 50 years ago. I then re-read it about 20 years ago and now listened to it as performed by the incomparable R. C. Bray. I really believe that this book and Armor by John Steakley are the gold standards by which all Military SciFi should be judged. Now pair Heinlein with Bray (who was born almost twenty years after this was published) and you have a stroke of genius. It was as if Heinlein meant to have one of his best works performed by R. C.. It is a must for any fan of science fiction.
You should be prepared for the society that Heinlein proposes in his book. It may make your head explode if you are overly progressive and woke. It actually makes a lot of sense (and has been debated for decades.)
All-in-all, this version will show you why it won the Hugo Award.
P.S. The movie has no relation to the book. It is parody that is meant to diminish the true writing and, quite frankly, is trash.

Storyline and dialogue were weak. Stopping with the series here. Just not interesting. Not really a wasted credit, but not really a well spent money either.

Series Review To Date
Revisado: 10-01-24
I tend to review series in total, unless there is a stinker that I need to torpedo. No need of torpedoing here. This is one of the more entertaining set of books I have listened to. The humor and hilarious prose just continue to make me giggle. Now for me to giggle, as I am an old, grizzled man, and get this kind of enjoyment out of a LitRPG series is truly an accomplishment. So, if you can stand the profanity (no sex though) and indulge in the craziness of Dinnman served up by Jeff Hays... burn those credits!

Revisado: 10-01-24
I have abandoned other LitRPG books because the have either become stale or political/woke. This series continues to entertain on a good level and thus I will continue to spend my credits on Zogarth. Bladree is always a winner.
Consider this a review for all the books to date. They all are of similar quality and I recommend them.

As good a historical fiction of the Civil War that I’ve read. A great parallel to John Jakes North and South series. Cullum does an excellent job. I will look for other narrations by him. On to the next book in the series.

Devolving
Revisado: 03-11-24
What started out as a genuinely good litRPG series is now devolving into angsty, political melodrama. I can take some of that, but the continual mental gymnastics that occur get tedious. The Anti-American tirades get old. How about a quick tour of all the American cemeteries throughout the South Pacific to remind the author how much we suck.
Am putting off the next novel to later... maybe much later. By the way though, Heath Miller does a great narration job.

But when he’s contacted by the Continuum, an organized group of time travelers based in the future, he learns his career is just getting started. The Continuum needs Joe’s help. One of their operatives is missing, last seen in 19th-century Paris, and they believe Joe’s ability to see the past might be the only way to find him. Teamed up with Gabrielle Green, an acerbic, wisecracking traveler, Joe heads back to 1873 on his most dangerous mission yet.

Historical Fiction X Time Travel
Revisado: 09-06-23
I tend to write series reviews as opposed to single book commentary. So that is what this is... a review of Joe Bridgeman/Nick Jones to date. (I know there is another book, and it is in my library. It is just time to gather my thoughts.)
I have read lots of time travel books, From the Grand Masters of SciFi to flights-of-fancy (think The Time Traveler's Wife.) Nick's work here falls somewhere in between. He bridges (no pun) a temporal story with historical fiction, mostly in the second two books.
The introductory story is entertaining and somewhat poignant, although you wish the main character would grow a pair and move on. But that is central to the story, so he gets a pass. The next two books are meatier and well written with more mystery than time high-jinks. From 1960s London to 1870s Pairs, Nick weaves an intriguing set of tales with excellent prose to carry the listener along.
I don't give spoilers, just recommendations. Read or listen to these books. They are very good stories!
If you listen, of course the cherry on top is Ray Porter. I have devoured his work from the Bobiverse to Jack Carr's novels. If he is not in the top three of Audible's list of narrators, there is something rotten in Denmark. Him reading to you should be enough to get you on board.
(Note to Nick: I have a lot of UK friends and they liberally spread their profanity throughout their conversations with me. So it makes it more authentic to amp it up just a little in your work. I know if I was in some of Joe's situations, I would be cussing a blue-streak, And Gabrielle certainly has a New York mouth, so she would be more believable when she vents. Alternately, the restraint you show in no gratuitous sex is refreshing.)

Coronation
Revisado: 08-03-23
Ok, I am ready to crown Jack Carr as the next Tom Clancy. His deep dive research and work to explain military/science/government mechanics and tie them in with a riveting thriller takes me back to days of "Clear and Present Danger". James Reese is tortured soul, patriot and killing machine and Carr sculpts him while Ray Porter brings him to life. And Reese drinks BRC (albeit with honey and creamer)! What is not to like!
One more, gusing time... it is read by Ray Porter.

Engaging and Not What I Was Expecting
Revisado: 08-03-23
If you are thinking Game of Thrones... this is not it. But, that being written, this is an engaging story of a "Lesser" working his way to becoming a master swordsman. Although all the training is somewhat tedious, the growth of young man is a good story. Think Stormlight Archives - Lite.
By the way, Prentice Onayemi's narration is quite good! He masters voices and dialect with enjoyable ease!
