In what may be the last memoir to be published by a living veteran of the pivotal invasion of Guadalcanal, which occurred almost 70 years ago, Marine Jim McEnery has teamed up with author Bill Sloan to create an unforgettably immersive chronicle of horror and heroism.

as a grandson whose grandfather served on the Centaurs during the war for the pacific. My grandfather passed before I could learn about his life aboard his ship. I do remember him saying to my mother that if it wasn't for what the Marines and what they had to do we wouldn't be living in the US as we know it today.. the books like this help me to understand my grandfather and his generation and understand the world i live in today. Thank you to the authors for sharing.

Historia
Spring 1916: the horror of a stalemate on Europe's western front. France and Great Britain are on one side of the barbed wire, a fierce German army is on the other. Shaara opens the window onto the otherworldly tableau of trench warfare as seen through the eyes of a typical British soldier who experiences the bizarre and the horrible - a "Tommy" whose innocent youth is cast into the hell of a terrifying war. In the skies, meanwhile, technology has provided a devastating new tool, the "aeroplane", and with it a different kind of hero emerges: the flying ace.
western front only
I enjoyed this historical novel. the author made me feel like I was a fly observing the events in this book. I do however feel a great deal was missing such as German infantry were missing there was far more with flying then the trenches. Furthermore the fronts were not represented well. I would call this a novel of the western front not of world war 1 as a whole.
since it is a novel it was really well done and I couldn't stop listening to it while plugging away at work.
