In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

A rip roaring, cheeky, and erudite ride through the Middle Ages. Helps to know the history already, but enjoyable to anyone who can read. Highly recommend

Historia
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

Too much book
Revisado: 01-24-24
Very close to being good (and useful) but in the end falls short - it’s too much information for one book. Ultimately - there is no narrative to be spun, no story to tell, it’s just a recitation of events and names. Shoots high and misses badly. Half point awarded for ambition

Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Historia
No company embodied American ingenuity, innovation, and industrial power more spectacularly and more consistently than the General Electric Company. GE once developed and manufactured many of the inventions we take for granted today, nearly everything from the lightbulb to the jet engine. GE also built a cult of financial and leadership success envied across the globe and became the world’s most valuable and most admired company. But even at the height of its prestige and influence, cracks were forming in its formidable foundation.

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Simply put, one of the best novels I’ve ever read. Lyrical, mesmerizing, absorbing - you can smell, feel and taste what it was like to be in that corner of Pennsylvania in the first days of July 1863. A book, like the battle it describes, stands alone. A truly towering achievement.

It’s abridged!!
Revisado: 02-17-18
Nobody wants to read an abridged version of this book - it’s completely takes the guts out of it and renders Dallek’s prose and research impotent. There is simply no character in this book, it is literally just a longer Wikipedia entry. It sucked. Get the full version
