As a HUGE Kevin Smith fan I’ve read this countless times and remember buying every issue as it came out, including one in Kevin’s store in NJ when I was road-tripping in the Northeast. The story itself is still a standout Marvel-DAREDEVIL story and the editing to make this an audio performance was good, but the voice work in this & special effects leave much to be desired. Whoever played Daredevil, his Mom & Spider-Man were OK, the Russian dialect for The Black Widow was fine too, but others were disappointing. Especially Dr. Strange & Mephisto. I could hear this cast’s eyes roll as they played these iconic characters who mean a lot to the fans & not give justice to Smiths fantastic signature dialogue. I know I could do better as an actor & voiceover artist who has performed on dozens of episodes as multiple characters on a horror/supernatural radio show podcast & actor with over 250 film, TV, theatre, & other credits. That made it even more frustrating. Do better producers & director. Give me a chance.

I performed the Orwell estate authorized play version of this 2 years ago at Open Window Theatre in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota as Syme (in that version combined with other characters here) Martin, & Immanuel Goldstein & I thought this was superb. Loved hearing the voiceover of HQ/Big Brother trailing Winston in this & the little touches that helped make it more “modern” but we’re still spot on to the novel & Orwell’s original creative ideas. Every performance was absolutely great. Highly recommended.

I discovered Bernard Evslins interpretations & retellings of Greek myth when I was in grade school in the 80’s & fell in love with his gift for describing people, places, actions & feelings. He wasn’t afraid of adjectives & used them well. I also think he had a great knack for dialogue & making the elevated language of Homer & other ancients feel more natural to our modern ears. Especially for young people. He doesn’t hold back on the violence or even innuendo & even musings on immortality & death but still keeps it friendly for young readers. I felt like an adult reading him as a kid. This is the one of his books I lost my hard copy of & listening to it took me back. It’s a terrific interpretation of THE ODYSSEY the whole family can follow & enjoy & the reader sounds a lot like John Hurt. They do a great job with the older male characters & an interesting variation on a couple women, but could’ve used more “charactery” voices on monsters who spoke & the Olympians. It’s still a great way for an entire family ranging in ages from 10 to 100 to listen to a version of THE ODYSSEY they all can enjoy.

MISALLIANCE is Shaw Light & Fun

I saw this show at the Repertory Theatre of St.Louis when I was in high school some 30+ years ago & it helped inspire me as an actor. It was so fun & witty & when I read more Shaw in college as a theatre major I was surprised to see how heavy handed he could be as compared to this with its light but insightful & funny commentary on class, socialism, new money VS old money, masculinity, relationships & other issues. It’s almost as if he was challenging or channeling Wilde in this show. The visual humor of the character who hides in the Turkish bath & overhears things and spectacle of the end of the first act is lost of course in this Audio version, but the cast is impeccable & gets to the light heart of the play. Glad I could revisit it this way and be reminded of how it captured & inspired me when I was younger.

A talented ensemble excellently performs a unique & exciting horror story. Strong scares & imagery from DeRosa & Rock. A great listen for fans of DOOM & director Ben Rock’s film ALIEN RAIDERS.

Really well written & done overall in every way for the most part. Surprisingly compassionate to male sexual assault victims. No excuse made for Maude. She’s just a misandrist psychopath. The show with the three women discussing & really, dismissing sexual assault & rape of men is particularly well done in that it’s infuriating & actually what I think would mostly happen. The Twitter scroll part truly captures the worst of Twitter, which is a site I actually enjoy. For sure worth the listen but if you have PTSD from sexual abuse/assault, you may not want to listen to this.

Aside from the late Glenn Headley I am unfamiliar with this cast but WOW. They are all brilliant. The performers playing Welles & Olivier capture them in their voices if not doing EXACT impressions. It’s flawless to me. The script is so smart, so spot on in its word choices & pacing. The actor playing Tynan does a great stutter. Headley’s Vivien Leigh is as charming as Scarlett O’Hara & just as devious while at the same time as fragile as Blanche Dubois. Stunning. God I miss her. It’s just a terrific show, I’d like to be able to see the scene of Welles trying to direct Olivier when he has the towel. There were a couple other things that I’d like to see but overall this works as an audio play thanks to the writing & performances.

LaBute Goes Off On Hollywood

LaBute let’s loose all his disdain for celebrity culture, L.A., Hollywood, actors, industry people, the culture of “showing” and being obnoxious about yourself, personal branding, smartphones & more with this script. It’s acerbic, intelligent, often hilarious, sometimes incredibly smart, & has his cruelty & gift for sharp dialogue running throughout in it. I’d have changed one major thing. I mean major. Because it’s too easy & pat & you know as soon as it’s proposed how it will play out. Other than that: it works. BUT that one thing does nearly ruin it. Despite a particularly juicy moment that comes from it. Performances across the board are simply great but I like Missy the best. Playing “dumb” is difficult & Ari Graynor is fantastic at it.

I love this play so much, I got to see it on Broadway with Wood & Geer (R.I.P.) and Andrew McCarthy as Clifford. Having this recording with Wood in his star-making Tony Award winning role & Geer who originated Jonesy is a true blessing, Lahti is an intense Terry & Dillahunt makes for a very sharp Clifford, less mercurial than McCarthy but maybe more beaten down & angry. It works in a different way. The rest of the cast is great, the music is all well done, and of course, the writing by Leight is near perfect. I don’t understand why more companies don’t produce this show. I wish I’d played Clifford when I was younger & now want to play Gene. This is a great production to have preserved. A must listen for theatre fans, who want smart, well-written, moving PLAYS.

Steven Boyer shows his great talent in this uniquely told performance of how a young American man becomes tied to a Japanese girl who committed a shocking murder through his obsession & the mistreatments he suffers due to stereotypes placed on him after the tragedy of Columbine. So many excellent elements are weaved through this entire performance. Written with great detail & compassion by Winkler in a very realistic/natural way. Sterling performances from the cast & direction. I could see some things that were coming, but overall they didn’t take away from the entire experience. Worth a listen for sure, especially considering it’s short runtime. Great drama packed into a tight 95-100 minutes.
