Historia
Nathan Cheng, known professionally as Nil, is anything but ordinary. With his fourth consecutive game jam win in the bag, he has a lot of big ideas for his own game studio, though he lacks the resources to make them real. Even if he did, the gaping hole in his heart from the untimely death of his sister last year has left him angry and bitter. If only he could have been there.

Well read, not so well written.
Revisado: 02-14-24
I love me a good ol' Isekai, but this ain't it. Our main character is overpowered and there is literally no conflict in this book. I might add that while I'm a gamer I never fancied souls games but that doesn't mean i don't know how lvls work. The way there's no struggle defeating over leveled foes over and over, without even a well written fight scene is plain boring.
Sure the character is flawed in that he's a gamer who believes he's the best at the game, which with a photographic memory he is. So his self importance makes sense, but it reads like a self insert/marry sue oc.
And he gets everything he wants, do no character development.
Spoiler, practically every boss mob can and will be one shot.
Nathan: is OP
Every bad guy: "what? how? i don't understand"
This also falls short due to the writing. It's basic and there's no feeling. All tell no show 🤷
I wish for a good isekai book but so far I've not found them as enjoyable as the anime variant.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Potential leading nowhere
Revisado: 02-09-24
Lets start of with the god shall we.
There are dragons, they are intelligent and mysterious. Mysterious mostly because they know a lot but don't communicate well, which in my opinion just feels like that's for the plot. But all in all they are cool (a bit unclear on the size of dragons though as humans supposedly ride bareback and that's hard enough on a horse that doesn't fly if they are wide).
The world building is OK, nothing amazing, but I am picky and I have read a lot where the world building is amazing so I might be a harsh judge.
The romance is romancing. I am NOT A FAN of these type sex scenes in fantasy novels, I would read erotica or smut for that. But even if I would want sex scenes, why is the male talking like he's kinky when he gave her some vanilla c*ck???
Our main protagonist is a scholar, which I loved, until she wasn't smart halfway into the book. I can forgive her being too trusting and naïve, but she reads as just oblivious at times and that is not what I'm expecting from a scholar, a protégé if you will.
The story is interesting enough but very predictable and I probably wont read the following books unless I can get them from a library of something.

Loved every POV
Revisado: 02-09-24
I don't know what to say, so much is happening, so many POVs and somehow I don't dread any of the perspectives. I honestly find most characters interesting and the character growth of the less worldly characters goes through is just *chefs kiss*!
The world is large and yet everything is so cohesive and enough stuff happening that I cant tell how the story will get where I know it will get. I hope that makes sense, I'm a serial predictor and a lot of books have a hard time not being too predictable for me. This one though, love it.
When books get too political I can sometimes find it a drag but here everything is really told through the characters lived experiences and its just really good. I think this book is better than the previous one in this series and I'm so looking forward to continuing with the next!

Amazing fantasy and relatable humans
Revisado: 02-09-24
Did my partner get this book thinking it was the first in a series? yes
Did I question my sanity and wanting to hear all of Simon's adventures that were mentioned? yes
Did we both learn as I was practically finished with the book that it is in fact not the first series in this universe? also yes.
But did this make the book less enjoyable? No, well maybe a little. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the characters, though the start was a little rough and that might have been eased by having read the previous books about Simon and his rise to high-king.
On to what happens in this book, it is a lot and its enough to keep me intrigued while also enough for me not to be able to guess all of the plotlines a mile away(which is something I struggle with when the plot is too linear). The realisations on why we get to follow certain characters and their role in the bigger picture is just *chefs kiss*
Now I have to admit I name no characters except for Simon because I cant remember names to save my life. However I knew who each POV was easily not only by their names but also distinct personalities, only 2 or 3 characters got confused in my mind at times. But I see that as a personal flaw and not an issue with same-face-syndrome. The world is large but not incomprehensible, religion and politics are nuanced and people have their own moral guidelines.
At the end we get some resolutions and also a fantastic setup for the next book where I am excited to continue the series! Where will the prince end up, will they find out what happened in the staircase and how will the queen fare on her mission to deal with political unrest?
All in all I would have given this a 5/5 if I would have had an easier time getting into the book, for now my rating is 4.5/5

If only I liked the "old guy writing his youth"
Revisado: 02-09-24
I have such a hard time with a book opening with an old version of the protagonist telling you about their life.
that being said I liked this book. just not enough to give it any more than 3 stars. Truly the prologue doomed this book series for me. And it shouldn't be such a big issue, but I'm just human.
Greatly written, Robin Hobb knows how to write 100%. The plot is a bit dragging as we have to read the decade it takes for the plot to start imo. It's not a bad thing per se, just not to my taste. It also ends spectacularly well. I could pick up the next book tomorrow or leave it and still have a satisfactory ending I could be happy with, which is such a great thing we don't always get with series.
If this book hadnt been told from old fitz/tom/boys perspective I'd probably given this book closer to 4 stars
