Historia
Reinhard Heydrich is widely recognized as one of the great iconic villains of the 20th century, an appalling figure even within the context of the Nazi leadership. Chief of the Nazi Criminal Police, the SS Security Service, and the Gestapo, ruthless overlord of Nazi-occupied Bohemia and Moravia, and leading planner of the "Final Solution," Heydrich played a central role in Hitler's Germany.

Good information, but dry.
Revisado: 01-28-24
The beginning of the book was very interesting, if not thrilling. Then it quickly settled into drudgery with a few interesting tidbits here and there. I had to force myself to finish it.
The reader was mostly okay except with some annoying habits. For instance, he would pronounce Martin Borman as "Bore-Man".
I've read so much Nazi-era history, that I thought I would enjoy expanding my knowledge on Heydrich. Alas, this Audible book missed the mark. Perhaps reading the actual book would have been better.

Uber Pilot
Revisado: 04-21-23
He flew better than his instructors. He shot down an enemy plane on his very first encounter with them. He married a movie star. Really?! Gee, I bet he could also leap over tall buildings in a single bound! Really though, the book was very good and worth the time. Gotta love the fighter jocks in their full glory.
While some of his feats seamed absolutely incredible, if not unbelievable, this is the guy who found his true niche in life. Even hawks and eagles were jealous of his prowess in the air.
Nevertheless, if you enjoy fighter pilot biographies like I do, read this book. You will not be disappointed.

They helped build Buchenwald, young Fritz learning construction skills which would help preserve him from extermination in the coming years. But it was his bond with his father that would ultimately keep them both alive. When the 50-year old Gustav was transferred to Auschwitz - a certain death sentence - Fritz was determined to go with him.

Good story telling
Revisado: 12-22-21
Some of what happened seemed less plausible, but it was an overall fantastic story. I enjoyed the entire book from start to finish.
The reader I thought was excellent. No complaints.
Some reviewers thought the story was dry or boring- not so! If you have zero knowledge or interest in these subjects, then sure skip this. Ignorance is bliss.

Pitch Perfect
Revisado: 09-01-21
Hands down, one of the finest books on WW II and DDay. The reader was off the charts pitch perfect in tone, intonation, emotion, timing. It felt like the author was whispering in my ear for the entire book.
I don't know how the story could have been better or better told.
If you want to transport yourself back in time to realize what life was like back then, this is your book.

Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

Great Book but it's getting dated
Revisado: 08-19-21
The book is short overall at 8-1/2 hours. Short and sweet. The chapters are a bit long though. The subject matter is clear by its title alone and the book details how close we come to losing our democracy. I have read several books of this era, but I learn something every time and from this book it is not different.
To be honest though, I much enjoyed the analysis of President Trump than that of those South American Leaders. And yes, that is because of my lack of So American history education. Nevertheless, it's all good.
The narrator, while very good, had a tendency to put me to sleep. Something about the soothing raspy voice I suppose.
Make no mistake though, this book should be read by every High School student. It rreally is that good.

Mafia Prince is the first-person account of one of the most violent eras in Mafia history - "Little" Nicky Scarfo’s reign as boss of the Philly family in the 1980s - written by Scarfo’s underboss and nephew, "Crazy" Phil Leonetti. The youngest-ever underboss at the age of 31, Leonetti was at the crux of the violent downfall of the traditional American Mafia in the 1980s when he infiltrated Atlantic City after gambling was legalized, and later turned state’s evidence against his own.

To be fair, you really need to read/listen to the entire book. There are some high points and low points in the book. But overall it's a sort of a tour de force - phenomenal! Read it. It's long but you will not be disappointed.
A lot of names, so much so, that I got lost - but you will get the jist.

Historia
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.

Historia
When the 160 men of Charlie Company were drafted by the US Army in May 1966, they were part of the wave of conscription that would swell the American military to eighty thousand combat troops in Vietnam by the height of the war in 1968. In the spring of 1966 the war was still popular, and the draftees of Charlie Company saw their service as a rite of passage. But by December 1967, when the company returned home, only thirty men were not casualties.

Historia
Using his own experiences, log books, and correspondence with other U-boat crewmen, Hans Goebeler offers rich and personal details about what life was like in the German Navy under Hitler. Since his first and last posting was to U-505, Goebeler's perspective of the crew, commanders, and war patrols paints a vivid and complete portrait unlike any other to come out of the Kriegsmarine. He witnessed it all, from deadly sabotage efforts that almost sunk the boat to the tragic suicide of the only U-boat commander who took his life during World War II.

Great Story
Revisado: 06-07-17
A very good insight into German side of things. I thought that the author was somewhat naive though. I understand patriotism, but the Germans did some pretty horrific things throughout the war.
Yet overall the history presented was quite good. It is a must read for WWII fans, especially those interested in submarine warfare.
