not bad for being free... however there is a plot twist that takes place about 3/4 of the way through that I did not care for, so it kinda made the last 1/4 of it very blah. but I think it's just my personal preference.

Historia
Tobias Jackson grew up in Coburn, a town where the gay population equaled exactly one: him. Add that to the fact that his dream guy was his best friend's jerky older brother, Levi Baxter, and it made hooking up virtually impossible. Now home from college for winter break, Toby is a different person. He left Coburn for San Francisco, where he wasn't the lone gay guy and the only black kid in town. And yeah, he took advantage of what the city had to offer. Apparently Toby isn't the only one who's changed.

that was intense. definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. there are some disturbing things that take place so if you are skittish about stuff like that might not be for you. if you are a numb robot like me (I work in mental health and have heard it all) you should be fine.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

3.5 stars. hard to follow on Audiobook
Revisado: 11-08-21
this is my 2nd novel by this author and this is the 2nd time I feel like I had a hard time following even though the storyline really intrigued me. I feel like certain styles of writing are better interpreted by physically reading as opposed to listening, and Mr. Whitehead falls under this category for sure in my opinion. I can guarantee you that if I would have physically read this book I would have rated it higher. overall would still recommend if you are interested!

very cute and FUNNY
Revisado: 11-04-21
this was a nice breath of fresh air. I don't usually go for romance novels but this was a nice read. the writing is very pragmatic and the humor thrown in was on point. between the writing and the exceptional narration, it's very easy to root for Andrea and also empathize with all of her romantic missteps. as someone who struggles in the romance department myself, it felt nice to be able to relate to Andrea and certain levels.
side note: I read somewhere that this is like if Bridget Jones's Diary and Crazy Rich Asians had a baby, and that couldn't be more spot on!

good listen for a crime/thriller fix
Revisado: 10-30-21
4.5 stars. I love a good thriller/crime/mystery but sometimes I get nervous as the endings tend to be very anti-climactic or unsatisfying. While this ending still wasn't my favorite it didn't leave me yelling "WTF?!" when I finished. very easy to root for Frankie and the good work she is doing as it can be applicable to real life today with the amount of missing POC that get no attention/coverage. my first novel by this author and definitely won't be my last. narration is also very good as well!

Revisado: 09-10-21
I'm not understanding the hype of this book. very boring and I struggled to finish it. the synopsis makes it sound like it's going to be this mystery/suspense thriller... it's not. I won't discourage anyone from reading it if they desire but I wouldn't recommend. narration was great

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

feel good story to end my summer
Revisado: 08-24-21
very good book! definitely a good story to read if you are needing something light and uplifting! definitely kept my interest the entire time and I loved that the author himself did the narration so you can tell just exactly how he wanted the characters and their words to be portrayed.
As a gay man I still don't care for the term "guncle" because at the end of the day I'm no different than my nieces and nephew's straight uncles, but the book was still very cute and would recommend to all!
