Historia
Hardy's work challenged sexual and religious conventions in a way that few other authors of the time dared. Though his modesty and kindness allowed some to underestimate him, or even to pity him, they did not prevent him from taking on the central themes of human experience: time, memory, loss, love, fear, grief, anger, death. This engrossing biography identifies the inner demons and the outer mores that drove Hardy and presents a complex portrait of one of the greatest figures in English literature.

One of the best biographies I've read/listened to
Revisado: 06-05-24
I had read most of Hardy's novels a few years ago, but have since returned to him to read his poetry. I had never realized he was a poet, and most of his later life was spent as a poet. Why he abruptly stopped writing novels and returned to poetry is well covered here, and there are many poems here, in full or excerpts, with the background story well interwoven. Also well covered is his troubled marriage(s). So well written, that by the end, I choked up while listening, and not like I couldn't see death coming in a biography. I am glad he received so much recognition by the end of his surprisingly humble life.
The narrator is suburb. She has has a bagful of appropriate accents to bring the quotes to life, and it is easy to follow when the story changes from background text (read in the King's English) to quoted works, and to quoted speech, Perfect.
I ended up buying a used hardcover edition in mint condition that has too sets of photographs, and I am looking forward to going back to review the virtual bookmarks I made in the audio edition. I look forward to trying another of the author's bios.

Historia
Lord Byron's satirical take on the legend of Don Juan is a moving and witty poem that sees the young hero in a reversal of roles. Juan sheds his image as a womanizer and instead becomes the victim of circumstance as he is relentlessly pursued by every woman he meets. Comprising 17 cantos of rhyming iambic pentameter, the poem is a crisp and accessible meditation on the madness of the world.

Who would’ve thought that this long poem would be so entertaining, at times gripping, at times profound. Well, worth the listen, and by an expert narrator that brought this to life. The Norton print edition has good background information and glosses at the bottom of the page, if somewhat abridged.

The three narrators are all excellent, and know how to read poetry, long way from your random YouTube attempt. Great selection as well, a good place to start if you’re dipping your toes, and supplement it with information found online, such as Wikipedia.

Historia
Illusion and love - two of James' favourite things - grin thorough this collection of funny and wicked tales. The illusion of social class, a favourite stamping ground for James, is explored in the glittering social comedy "The Real Thing", first published in 1892, in which an artist attempts vainly to capture the nature of aristocracy via painting what he takes to be 'real' members of that social group.

Thank you Jeremy Northam for narrating "The Real Thing" in such a masterful way that I came to appreciate the beauty of Henry James' style. Highly recommended, especially if you want to give James another try.

Historia
The Irish have always had a knack for telling wonderful stories, and their fantastic ability has been recognized from early Gaelic times. For centuries, stories of all kinds have been offered to friends and strangers alike as a form of entertainment and communication. Today in Ireland, the short story is revered even above the novel. Hearing these magnificent stories, we become aware of more than just the humor and travail of a small island.

Excellent collection and narration
Revisado: 12-02-23
I've read/listened to nearly 400 short stories over the last 3 months (making up for lost time in this genre) and a couple of these were among the very best, in particular "The Weaver's Grave" by Seamus O'Kelly (really more of a novella than a short) and; "My Oedipus Complex" by Frank O'Connor. Griffin's narration is top notch, delivered with a reasonable approximation of an Irish accent, and he is one of the rare male narrators that can deliver a woman's voice. I just wish there was a second and third volume, would love to have an audible edition of Oxford Book of Irish Short Stories, where you can find more.

Historia
This is the epic sea adventure, a harrowing tale of slavery and revolt aboard a Spanish ship, is often regarded as Melville's finest short story. The balance of forces is complete, the atmosphere one of epic significance, the light cast upon the hero intense to the highest degree, the realization of the human soul profound, and the telling of the story orchestrated like a great symphony.

Tightly constructed novella, excellent narration
Revisado: 10-04-23
The narration is excellent. The long short story builds in ambiguity and becomes quite suspenseful. Morally, who is more fundamentally debased? I recommend not reading anything about the story, then look at the Wikipedia article about the novella to see Melville's source, it is based on a true event.

Historia
This question obsessed Renaissance writers, none more than Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, perhaps the first recognizably modern individual. A nobleman, public official, and winegrower, he wrote free-roaming explorations of his thought and experience, unlike anything written before. He called them essays, meaning “attempts” or “tries.” He put whatever was in his head into them: his tastes in wine and food, his childhood memories, the way his dog’s ears twitched when it was dreaming, as well as the religious wars....

Engaging and thoughtful discussion of Montanes life and ideas as well as historical background. Wonderful narrator, makes it clear when she’s speaking in Montaigne‘s voice, or other voices, or background text. Not sure why there are negative comments on the narrator. Listen to the sample, you’ll know from that. Lovely British accent is appropriate for this book.

From birthdays to birth rates to how we perceive the passing of time, mathematical patterns shape our lives. One of the rare nonfiction books that are so engaging you are sorry they come to an end. The chapters on exponential growth and epidemics are of obvious relevance to our current times, and alone worth the purchase. I was nervous about the narration (authors rarely make the best narrators) but he did a fabulous job, I enjoyed his northern UK accent and how he slipped into an American accent for many of the quotations.
