Historia
Fanny Burney's wickedly funny satire follows the trials and romantic adventures of the young and beautiful Evelina as she tries to make her way through 18th-century Britain handicapped by her three great problems: being poor, being illegitimate - and being a girl. Evelina was a raging best seller when it was first published in 1778 and is widely credited with being the first of the great British domestic novels. Burney was a direct influence on her immediate follower, Jane Austen.

This is the best version!
Revisado: 01-04-20
This is the best performance. I very much enjoyed the story. I can see why Frances Burney inspired Jane Austen and there is at least one phrase (pertaining to a woman's reputation) that is identical to one used in Pride And Prejudice. Burney has the same sarcastic wit as Austen, which had me laughing out loud at times. Frances Burney is my new favorite author.

2017 has been a monumental year for Audible, having just celebrated our 20th anniversary, a milestone that would have never been possible without our wonderful and loyal listeners. One of our major commitments is bringing new and diverse audio experiences to our members, so this year, as our gift to you, we pulled together a collection that reflects a little bit of everything we’ve been up to recently.

Well, I'm glad it was free.
Revisado: 12-17-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better collection of stories.
Has Gather ‘Round the Sound turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
How could the performance have been better?
The female narrators were screechy and over the top. A more subtle reading might have helped.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Really the only good story in the bunch was the Dickens story. The rest were incredibly short and not enjoyable or interesting.
Any additional comments?
I'm just glad this audiobook was free. It's of little value with the exception of one short story.

Historia
Across America a mysterious disease is turning ordinary people into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, themselves, and even their own families. Working under the government’s shroud of secrecy, CIA operative Dew Phillips crisscrosses the country trying in vain to capture a live victim. With only decomposing corpses for clues, CDC epidemiologist Margaret Montoya races to analyze the science behind this deadly contagion. She discovers that these killers all have one thing in common.

The voices are distractingly goofy.
Revisado: 09-12-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The voices are sometimes terrible. The female doctor's voice is a strangely over the top attempt at sounding female - like something from a cartoon. The main character's voice is again an over the top representation of a tough guy. Perry's father's dialogue is 100% caricature which might have been less so in print (maybe) but which is amplified in a voice performance. The narrator is good, but man those other characters' voices are just awful.
What was most disappointing about Scott Sigler’s story?
The evolution of Perry from a decent guy to being a sexist, abusive, gross jerk in the final chapter - including threatening a woman by saying he would "f***" her with a butcher knife - made me not want to finish the book. A better author could make the point that Perry is losing his humanity and succumbing to his violent side as he deteriorates, in a much more subtle way. This feels ham-handed.
How could the performance have been better?
Different voice actors.
What character would you cut from Infected?
Perry's father.
Any additional comments?
I wouldn't have paid a credit for this knowing what I know now.

Historia
At a suburban barbecue, a man slaps a child who is not his own. This event has a shocking ricochet effect on a group of people, mostly friends, who are directly or indirectly influenced by the incident. In this remarkable novel, Christos Tsiolkas turns his unflinching and all-seeing eye onto that which connects us all: the modern family and domestic life in the 21st century.

Repeated graphic vulgarity is just boring.
Revisado: 07-13-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
More character, less sex fantasies and masturbation.
What could Christos Tsiolkas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Focus more on story and less on tediously repeated graphic descriptions of sex acts. Yes, sex is a normal part of a healthy life but do we really need to hear numerous descriptions of ejaculate complete with what it looked like, what it was on, what it was wiped up with? And that is just with one of the characters and before we even get to the women. Enough already.
What didn’t you like about Alex Dimitriades’s performance?
Great parts are read in a dull and emotionless voice.

Historia
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Great story, but RIP headphone users.
Revisado: 02-24-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The story is quite interesting, and the narration is like a radio performance with background music, etc. The characters go from whispering and speaking softly to screams and loud noises and mood music. This makes it nearly impossible, or at least quite unpleasant, for one to listen to with headphones.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I'd prefer a traditional narration to the screaming and loud mood music.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes.
