Historia
Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her last remaining relatives are the Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at the glittering and gloomy estate of Thorn Grove. Thorn Grove’s patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife, Lillian, through wild parties and drink, while eldest son Percy grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother.

The narrator is amazing!
Revisado: 10-05-22
I haven’t even finished the book, so I will update this review when finished.
However, I had to stop what I was doing to review and say the narrator is 100% amazing. I listen to a lot of audible books at work, and I can’t tell you how many female narrators that can’t do a decent male voice. A lot of them. I’m finding it’s rare to find a narrator who can speak in a voice that’s a believable male, double points if it’s an attractive voice for a male.
When they can’t get the voice right, it’s so incredibly off putting, and I’m ashamed to say it actually changes my view of the book. If I find a certain character’s voice annoying, I’ll end up disliking them a bit.
This narrator is great! And so far the story is interesting and I’m happy with it :)

I enjoy Julia Quinn’s book.
Revisado: 08-24-22
I enjoy her books. They’re light, sweet, and entertaining. They’re the kinda books you reach for when you’re stressed and just want an enjoyable read that doesn’t distress you.
They’re like a nice comfort blanket.
As for this book, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I haven’t finished it yet, but I had to say that I was hating the narrator. When she was narrating, that was fine, but the voices for all the characters was EXTREMELY annoying. Especially her voices for men. They sounded stuffy, boorish, old. Like what you’d imagine a cartoon British man would sound like.

Myra has a gift many would kidnap, blackmail, and worse to control: she’s a portrait artist whose paintings alter people’s bodies. Guarding that secret is the only way to keep her younger sister safe now that their parents are gone. But one frigid night, the governor’s wife discovers the truth and threatens to expose Myra if she does not complete a special portrait that would resurrect the governor's dead son.

It was okay!
Revisado: 08-17-22
It was a nice read to listen to while working, but it’s not something I was overly excited to even listen to. The romance was rather obvious, and almost an ‘insta-love’ feel. I feel like there were certain things left unanswered or not explained.

I loved the book!!!!! However, the narrator wasn’t particularly good at male voices, so I had to tolerate that more than I wanted to.

Historia
Wren Greenrock has always known that one day she’d steal her sister’s place on the throne. Trained from birth to return to the palace and avenge her parents’ murder, she’ll do anything to become queen and protect the community of witches who raised her. Or she would, if only a certain guard wasn’t quite so distractingly attractive, and if her reckless magic would stop causing trouble. . . .

I loved the main character, Rose.
Revisado: 08-08-22
She’s adorable, believable. She has flaws, but she also has positives that make up for it. She’s arrogant and spoiled, but she’s also compassionate and hopeful. She’s a well written character, and I loved listening to her pov. I have a feeling that the twins will rule the kingdom together, but I believe Rose would be a better queen.
Wren… is an unlikeable character to me. She’s selfish, narrow minded… she does silly things knowing it’s dangerous just because she knows she could. The amount of times she ‘slipped up’ is ridiculous. It’s almost as if she didn’t even try.
Most female characters are written as ‘tough’ as though that somehow makes them a strong female character. But Rose was done well, in that she’s soft but she had a strong heart and will.
I enjoyed the book, but Wren was testing my resolve.
As for the romance, it’s… a good backstory? I guess? The male characters don’t have a love of ‘character’ to them. Wren’s love interest, especially, is rather dull.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

OH GODS!!
Revisado: 05-23-22
If you were to start a drinking game every time Poppy says ‘OH GODS!!!’ in various ways, you’d probably get alcohol poisoning. Honestly, it seems like such a minor thing, but it’s honestly aggravating each time you hear it ( and it’s a lot, I’m not kidding ), particularly with this narrator.
Now, the narrator isn’t terrible. She’s a lot better than most. But there’s almost… too much theatrics in her voice, if that makes sense? Some of the words she pronounces are so exaggerated, and if you’re someone who gets uncomfortable around someone pretentious, it’ll feel like that. It’s the same with how she voices the character Hawke. I don’t know why the way she voices him bothers me, but it sounds so… faux?
The story is good. Okay. It’s not the greatest story I’ve ever read, but it keeps you interested!
My main con/concern was the narration, which isn’t entirely bad, but it makes me feel second hand embarrassment sometimes.

Historia
It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his 18th year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

The female lead?
Revisado: 07-07-21
The female lead ruins the book for me. I’ve just started it, several chapters in… but the female lead is extremely aggravating. She is teleported from DC to basically a castle. Most people would think there dreaming, maybe dead… she demands to know what happened. I get that, but also… how the fudge do you explain that to someone who doesn’t know magic exists? Instead this whole thing is just brushed over and she spends more time trying to get away from Grey and Ren? than realizing this is an entirely different place and where the hell is she going to go if this obviously isn’t America anymore. She takes a horse and basically goes out into the snow ( which magically happens, btw, but she doesn’t linger on that and keeps going ) with no plan whatsoever. WHERE IS SHE GOING TO GO??? I’m honestly so confused because there’s so little logical planning from her showing up to her trying to escape.
Then you have the male lead who keeps commenting about how all the other girls they’ve kidnapped before never would’ve fought him, and instead of running away, they would’ve been awed by the pretty, shiny things. Like Harper is ‘not like other girls’ sort of situation.
I like girls who can take care of themselves. But I’d much rather have a weak girl who is smart and has common sense than someone like Harper who just doesn’t think at all — literally, there is no thinking on her end other than a few commentary moments where she happens to notice that yeah, this is flipping weird.
It’s going to be a struggle to finish:

Good!
Revisado: 11-05-20
I liked it. However, one thing upset me really bad and I have to say something. Liz. Her character is toxic, and the main character constantly forgiving her for her toxic behavior is just... bad. Hopefully, if anyone read this and realizes that someone in their life does this to them, you drop them from your life. No matter what excuse Liz gave to Aly, it shouldn’t excuse her from how she treated her. You find out that one of the reasons she’s rude to Aly was because she’s jealous and loved Will. The author makes it seem like Aly might actually forgive her if this was the reason. That is so stupid. Just because she was in love with the same guy doesn’t give her the right to treat you like crap.

They say Paris is always a good idea.... You know what I say? Paris would be a much better idea if I spoke the dang language. I can't even board the metro to visit the Louvre without ending up at the Moulin Rouge, and let's not even mention how I'll ever make it through a day at my new office. Fortunately my company hooks me up with my own personal translator. Ooh la la. Or should I say bloody hell? Because he's charming, witty, and British, and he brings the city to life for me.

Richard did an amazing job.
Revisado: 10-17-20
First off, I just wanna say that the male narrator did a fucking fantastic job. He got the accents spot on, and adding infliction to certain words that others might have missed. It was great, and I really loved listening to his voice. The female narrator, however, was aggravating to listen to. Idk if that was what audible or the author intended, but it felt like I was just listening to some rapid fire talk with the most annoying voice.
Tbh, I couldn’t finish the book. The character Joy was extremely frustrating to me and I don’t know why. I got to the part SPOILER where she is telling Griffin about her ex boyfriend and how she felt like she was responsible and that she had to stay with him. She started getting annoyed that he was confused. The whole thing just seemed senseless. She was upset with her ex for how he treated her, but she put herself in that position in the first place. Like Griffin said, why stay with him if that were the case? She gets defensive and insists that she wanted to do the right thing. Okay, but why? To me it came off as her wanting to look selfless when the whole ordeal was her doing and entirely stupid. I think the reason she gets defensive at Griffin is because she realizes that, but I don’t really care. That scene left me with a nasty taste on a book I wasn’t even sure to begin with. Good thing it was free.

Well written!
Revisado: 10-15-20
This was well written and I enjoyed listening to it to pass the time. However, there is a lot of unnecessary drama, and some unrealistic bits that got me. Spoiler alert. Nolan spends her entire high school years in love with this guy, Reed. When they’re together and happy, it’s great. But any time something happens that Reed doesn’t like, he takes it out on her. And she just takes it and forgives him so easily for it. It hurts me so much reading this. Reed and Nolan get into an accident, Reed turns into an asshole. A huge asshole. He says something to her that he knows will hurt her and she decides to end things. I saw, YES, GOOD. Because this is what their future looks like, it’s always going to end up with her taking the brunt of all his anger. But she keeps worrying about him, and she ends up forgiving him and obviously they get back together. I know there are two other books of them, but I don’t know if I want to read them if this is how it’s always going to be, with him constantly shutting her out and taking his anger out on her. Just a couple of weeks and she talks to him like he never insulted her and her family. Damn.
