Well written but boring with horrible narration

This was difficult for me to get through. I skipped quite a bit and listen on 1.40 speed. If this had not been a book club read I would have given up on it completely.

Every person living in a democracy should read/listen to this book!! I have taken heed and I am personally trying to do my part. I now subscribe (not just read) one local and two national news papers, I have applied for my passport and I am actively supporting the campaign of Pete Buttigieg by donation and volunteer work. I'm not saying everyone needs to support Pete. What I am saying is, find a candidate or a cause that is dear to you and get active. Thank you Timothy Snyder for the wake up call.

What did you like best about this story?
Language is very interesting to me and Anne Curzen had some really great information.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Professor Anne Curzan?
I'm not sure who I would have preferred but I will say Dr. Curzen was very difficult to listen to. She sounds like she took a jog around the block before she came into the studio. She also has very long pauses in the most ridiculous places. I listened to this course on 1.5 and managed to get through it all and enjoy what I learned in the process.
Any additional comments?
Another great language course is Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths of Language Usage by John McWhorter Ph.D. This course has some of the same topics as The Secret Life of Words and is much easier to listen to. Dr. McWhorter is filled with great insight and knowledge. You can watch to his TED talk Txting is Killing Language. JK!!! to get an idea of what his lectures are like.

The stories are very good and I am thoroughly enjoying India Plumes narrations. I don't believe the next book in the series is available in audio book which is highly disappointing to me.

This was my fourth Violet Blue book. I have learned so much from her books. If you're looking for real information delivered a mature, realistic, sensible and educated manner without judgment or prejudice I recommend any book by Violet Blue.
This was a different narrator than I've heard doing her books in the past. I was not very impressed with the narration. But the information was still conveyed in a way that made sense.

To begin with, the narrator has no concept of the flow of the English language. She chops the sentences and the misplaced pauses are far to long. I listened to this at a much faster speed and the pauses were still too long and irritating.
Some of the "chapters" probably don't fill a full page.
