Too long and main mystery is weak
Revisado: 11-21-24
I found the main mystery to be confusing and uninteresting. i had a hard time keeping track of who was killed and why. The secondary plot about the plague was more interesting.

confusing time shifts
Revisado: 09-27-24
Great narrator can't save confusing story. Constant shifts between character scenes disrupted the flow if the narrative. And what was the point of the air tag which is mentioned twice and never seen again. Other actions by characters make little sense.

Historia
Geoffrey Lushington, Mayor of Marlow, dies suddenly during a Town Council meeting. When traces of aconite—also known as the queen of poisons—are found in his coffee cup, the police realize he was murdered. But who did it? And why? The police bring Judith, Suzie and Becks in to investigate as Civilian Advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart’s content, which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure.

Judith is annoying for far too long
Revisado: 08-17-24
Most of the book is spent with Judith accusing each of the suspects of the crime/s and explaining how and why they did it. Her rush to judgement was generally based on one clue, which the suspect then explained away. Her need to be one step ahead of the police at every turn became tedious and unbelievable. Book needed to be shortened by about 2 hours.

terrible narration makes it impossible to follow
Revisado: 07-17-23
I'm perplex why the Narrator, Hillary, is even a character. the lack of variety in character voices made the story hard to follow. Half-way through I didn't care who did it and stopped listening.

Historia
When the body of a young woman is found near the ruins of a haunted abbey, everyone assumes she died of fright. A postmortem examination tells a different story. Not only was Elizabeth Barrett poisoned, but the lethal dose of cyanide must have been administered by someone close to her - someone she trusted, who may have known her secret. As Captain Redmond and Constable Haze delve into the victim's seemingly ordinary life, they learn she wasn't the proper, biddable wife everyone believed her to be.

Story lost in long author lectures
Revisado: 01-20-23
This is the 2nd book in the series. I enjoyed the first one. This one, not so much. I am 1/2 way through and not sure I will finish. The mystery and murder are lost in long lectures on women's rights, individualism, child poverty, and other social issues that distract from the story. The story just seems like a convenient way for the author to lecture the reader. Not sure I will give the next book my credit. Also, narrator's American accent is confusing. Jason is supposedly from New York but his accent seems southern at times. And I'm not sure an 11-year-old American boy in 1866, who spent time with the Union Army in a prison camp would have such an audible Irish accent.

Historia
Late December, 1389. Nor, as Hildegard discovers, is she the only visitor intent on acquiring the relic.

Narrator yelled most of Lennox's dialogue.
Revisado: 01-21-22
For some reason, possibly the bland dialogye, the narrator felt he had to raise his voice for much of the male dialog. And most of the female dialog was so low it was hard to hear. except fir the one young women who shrieked her way through the book.

italian hard to hear and bizzare vocabulary select
Revisado: 08-24-21
I didn't finish this book. Even asleep I dont need to know the Italian for urine sample, sonogram, toaster, or blender. The first chapter includes professions and kitchen appliances. could the author have looked for more common words that someone studying Italian might want to learn. In an effort to be calming and induce sleep. the Italian speakers voice is so low and mellow it is often difficult to understand her pronunciation. I plan on returning.
