Historia
In this episode, I discuss science-supported protocols to optimize your depth and rate of learning of material and skills. I explain the neurobiology of learning and neuroplasticity and how correctly timed, self-directed test-taking can be leveraged to improve learning and prevent forgetting. I discuss the study habits of the most successful learners, ways to limit distractions, how to set study goals, and how tests can be used as tools to learn, not just as a means for evaluating one’s mastery of learned material. A surprising aspect of tests, specifically self-testing soon after exposure...

I'm shocked someone could speak this much on incredibly simple obvious content. You need to ...shut off your phone to study well? How about get sleep? Seriously? Nothing enlightening here. Didn't even need a quiz to figure it out

Historia
In The Collapse of Parenting, Leonard Sax, an acclaimed expert on parenting and childhood development, identifies a key problem plaguing American children, especially relative to other countries: the dramatic decline in young people's achievement and psychological health. The root of this problem, Sax contends, lies in the transfer of authority from parents to their children, a shift that has been occurring over the last 50 years and is now impossible to ignore.

Insightful, Courageous and Essential Message
Revisado: 08-07-22
I'm a new parent to a beautiful little boy and about to take the journey again with a little girl in a few months. However, I've been a teacher to adolescents and teenagers for almost 20 years. I never had a healthy relationship with my parents and unfortunately they are not a part of my life so I'm always eager for educated, informed perspectives from other experts and fellow parents.
This author echoes MANY of the same concerns I have about children in contemporary America who have growing addictions to social media, video games and are increasingly being medicated to "solve" their academic struggles. There is no preaching or personal agenda from the author, but a pragmatic, no nonsense analysis to the changing landscape of American culture. He also offers advice on how we as parents can make sure we instill a "family first" ideology, build a healthy connection with them and raise them with values such as humility, integrity and courage in a "me first" competitive culture.
I highly recommend

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship - the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

A Beautiful Unexpected Love Story
Revisado: 04-24-19
I half read/half listened to this book. While the actor here is decent, he isn't anywhere near the caliber I've heard from top readers like Luke Daniels from The Unwind series or Santino Fantana from You. He's engaging, but doesn't "switch" into different characters through his voice. For this book that can be troubling when it turns primarily to dialogue. As a result, I enjoyed the time I spent in the physical act of reading more than listening.
As for the story, it's amazing. It took a while to engage me, but once it did I found it heart breakingly beautiful. I started it when a close friend was diagnosed with cancer and finished it after they died 2 weeks later. Please do not be suaded by my connection because this is more a story about self discovery, friendship, love and family. Still, I found a tremendous amount of solace in it. It was an escape and a much needed affirmation that even in our pain, confusion and sorrow we can appreciate the vast elegance in our universe.
I'm still in the midst of my grief so giving details on the how I arrived here is just too tied to my personal experience. However, the fact that I wanted to share the power of this reading experience while struggling to cope is a testament to its brilliance.
I just wanted to communicate my deepest gratitude to the author for writing this story.

Historia
Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past 10 years, this 30-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he's heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him. In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can't stop looking over his shoulder.

Just an ok sequel
Revisado: 03-21-19
NYC Joe was scary, charismatic and tough as nails. LA does to him exactly what it does to all people, makes them less intense and more superficial. His murders are uninspired and he becomes rather predictable. The actor is great, the description still interesting, but the plot is slow and the secondary characters are dull.

Very interesting premise to take the perspective of someone who has literally lived their life in a bubble. I enjoyed the read even though I saw where it was headed very early into the book. Regardless, the characters are charming and well developed.

Historia
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

An Absolute disappointment
Revisado: 02-23-18
After such an excellent debut book, I foolishly expected more of the same. Instead you're left with a poorly constructed, cliched story that actually gives away its own plot, LITERALLY. He actually has the character predict and read out what will happen. Then references that prediction for the remaining 10 chapters. Why ruin your own book like thay?
Reading this is like witnessing Ernest Cline's regression. The writing is inexcusable poor. His diction is so lackluster and basic that he trashes the art of story telling. If I had to hear one more use of "unbridled" or "face crumpled in anguish" I was going to scream. He gives up on description altogether through juvenile references to movie scenes. It borders on plagiarism because it is so overused.
All could be forgiven if there were fun characters. Alas, another let down. Too many underdeveloped characters that die too quickly. He throws them in just to move the plot rather than enrich the story. I didn't connect or care about any of them half way through. Then again, he did let me know exactly what would transpire so why would I?
I hate to think Cline is a one trick pony and learns from this epic fail. This could have been a good book, but the execution feels rushed ...too much like he's riding the coat tails of Ready Player One. Do better Cline or trust it really will be "game over."
