Historia
Welcome to the Northwestern Hemisphere, 2529. An equally exciting and terrifying world born from the ashes of our own, where almost half of people are born invisible, and thus relegated to second-class citizenship. Sweetmint, a young invisible woman, has done everything right her entire life, from excelling in school to landing a highly sought-after apprenticeship with a mysterious, powerful inventor.

Solid Sophomore Novel
Revisado: 07-09-24
Mateo Askaripour follows up his 2020 New York Times best selling novel, Black Buck, with a new book that is sure to be a hit. This Great Hemisphere still has Mateo’s voice in the writing, but in terms of genre, it’s a futuristic journey that I was hooked on. The world-building in this novel is extremely well thought out, to the point that I feel it would make for a good TV series. As for the audiobook, the narrator does an excellent job immersing me into the prose. I would recommend listening to it on 1.2x speed, however, but I’m also admittedly an impatient New Yorker so that’s probably just me.

A book about the author
Revisado: 07-17-23
This book can be summarized in one three-word sentence: Consistency generates results. That should save you 6 hours of your life.
Should you choose to still read the book, you’ll hear a collection of stories all centering around the words, “I,” “me,” and “my.” Who could forget the tale of when the author’s employee asked for a raise, and instead of saying “no” he convinced her that he’d show her how to spend less money. You truly get the sense this author lives in a fantasy world where remedial concepts like “gravity” are for the proletariat.
Rather than waste time with this book, I’d recommend anything by Tim Ferris. Less self-aggrandizing and more actionable material.

One of the best audiobooks
Revisado: 11-30-21
The story alone is very digestible and balances entertainment and humor with emotions and complexity. When you factor in the showmanship and additional audio snippets (specifically around the musical portions) it has the makings of one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever spent money on.
If I were to recommend a good first audiobook for someone to get into, this would be the one.

Historia
An unambitious twenty-two-year-old, Darren lives in a Bed-Stuy brownstone with his mother, who wants nothing more than to see him live up to his potential as the valedictorian of Bronx Science. But Darren is content working at Starbucks in the lobby of a Midtown office building, hanging out with his girlfriend, Soraya, and eating his mother's home-cooked meals. All that changes when a chance encounter with Rhett Daniels, the silver-tongued CEO of Sumwun, NYC's hottest tech startup, results in an exclusive invitation for Darren to join an elite sales team on the thirty-sixth floor.

Best Audiobook Ever
Revisado: 01-31-21
In 2020, I made a goal of listening to at least one full-sized novel per month, and ended up listening to 40. From the Steve Jobs Biography (40 hours) to business classics like “Good to Great,” to high-profile best sellers like Barack Obama’s “A Promised Land.” None of these 40 books can match what I am currently listening to - Black Buck by first-time author Mateo Askaripour.
Story: The story is engaging and funny enough that I sometimes forget that I’m consuming a book, rather, it seems more like a Netflix show. The drama, comedy, and sales acumen are all spot on and interlace at the right times in the most fluid way possible.
Performance: The narration by Zeno Robinson is spot on, adapting to the tone, inflection , and personality of each character. At points I found myself wondering who Zeno is. Is he a voice actor? A screen actor? How can he possibly match every bit of dialogue with what I was envisioning it would sound like from the characters? It added an additional sense of realism to an already entertaining book.
Overall: Many audiobooks seem a bit drawn out, as if the author was trying to fill a word count for a publisher. This story avoids all those pitfalls that most books succumb to. It is a VERY well crafted story with depth and nuance, which is matched by a top-tier audio performance. I would recommend this to either first-time audiobook listeners or seasoned audio veterans.
