My life has been made up of gilded lies. But death has been shaped from rot. Like a phoenix caught fire, I need to rise from the ashes and learn to wield my power. My wings may have been clipped, but I am not in a cage, and I'm finally free to fly from the frozen kingdoms I've been kept in.

The ending is exciting and makes me reach for the next book.
Revisado: 03-26-25
There is a chunk of this book that is boring. Very boring. Auren is very descriptive 🙄 and whiny 😫. To be fair, she has gone through a lot, but there is a section that is hard to get through. I put the book down for over a month. I even tried to return it (but couldn’t 😒). Finally, I picked it back up again, slogged through the slow stuff and it did begin to pick back up. I will likely buy the next book because I do want to know what happens next. I found the ending unexpected and intriguing. This is not a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book. I do not highly recommend it, nor am I likely to listen to it again. It’s a 3.75 ⭐️ book. But, if you’re invested in the series there are some very satisfying aspects.

Unexpected
Revisado: 01-27-25
I loved the male and female narrators! I wish every book was read like this. The story was unexpected and surprising. Truly a delight.
Warning: the c-word is used a lot. I hate this word. It’s nasty, crass, and disrespectful of women. I won’t excuse its use, but I will say that I think it says something about the characters who use it.
Spoiler: the book opens on an orgy and there is violent rape.
Still- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because the main character is lovely and admirable. The story is exciting and not at all predictable.

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow...where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles, and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town. Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

This story is a bit melancholy
Revisado: 01-25-25
The narration is well done. It fits the mood of what is essentially a ghost story. there are some twists the reader doesn’t completely see coming, and others that are guessed at. It’s the kind of book that begs a reader to listen/read again to see what was missed once the mystery is unfurled. I recommend with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very sweet. Not terribly compelling. I was able to put it down for a week before listening again. I don’t think it’s worth a credit, but worth a listen if it’s on sale.

It was okay
Revisado: 11-18-24
Let me begin by telling you that I am not a fan of duel timeline stories. I fact, I must not have looked at this one too closely, because I’m not sure why I purchased it.
If you like the mystery of that kind of thing, this could be your jam. The performance was great! I liked the characters. I hated the flip flop of time lines.
What I found most displeasing, was the whole book centers around Serena’s sister’s disappearance eleven years ago. So, as a reader, you think that this is the great mystery to solve (note: I do not like mystery stories either). However, once it is solved, it is rather disappointing and flat. It becomes more of a byline in the overall story. The author makes the reader believe it is somehow critical and there will be some epic tie-in, but there really isn’t.
The sister’s disappearance is more like a vehicle that drives the story, bringing people together to solve a much bigger mystery. So, the fact that it doesn’t really feature in to the bigger story felt like a flop to me.
3 ⭐️- for me that means I finished the book, but do not recommend it.

This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear.

Narrator does justice to the book
Revisado: 07-19-24
I have read this book twice. I love Ayla’s story! I was a littler nervous about buying the audio. On the sample, the narrator’s voice sounds a little craggy. She sounds older, and Ayla is a young woman. I wasn’t sure it would be a good fit. I was wrong. The narrator does a wonderful job adjusting her voice to the various characters. Often, the listener can tell who is speaking by her voice, before we are told who spoke.

Historia
Cash McLendon has always had an instinct for self-preservation, one that was honed by an impoverished childhood and life with an alcoholic father barely scraping by on the streets of Saint Louis in 1872. He’s always had a knack for finding and capitalizing on the slightest opportunities, choosing the path of financial security over happiness or real friends. He eventually builds himself up from a Saint Louis street urchin to the son-in-law and heir apparent to industrial mogul Rupert Douglass. Though it lacks passion, his life seems securely set: a wife, a career, property, standing.

Different for me
Revisado: 02-14-24
I don’t read many westerns. This is my third one. I think the author did a great job of creating the time and place for the reader. The story flowed and was never boring. There is action and excitement. The MC is not much of a hero, but he’s trying. Ultimately, this is a story of underdogs who never quite succeed. So, in that respect the story is underwhelming if not accurate to real life. Maybe subsequent books build to the more satisfying conclusion I was hoping for, but I am not necessarily enamored enough to continue the series.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Germans serving Nazi Germany were victims too
Revisado: 02-07-24
What stood out to me the most was that there are two protagonists on opposite sides of this war. The book is a beautiful illustration of how just a few people victimized not only those they felt were less than, or their own countrymen, but even people who were on their side, doing their duty for the Fuer.
This is not a happy book. It is an interesting one, but not happy. Listen to it if you are in the mood for a book that leaves you feeling melancholy. The victory is that those who lived, kept living past the horrors and trauma.
Listen to it with an ear of faith; while this world can inflict unimaginable pain on its inhabitants, there will be healing for all. Because of Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice, families will be reunited and healing will happen.

Historia
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

This is my least favorite book in the trilogy. That said…
Revisado: 12-13-23
The audio of these books is superb. I have read Mockingjay a handful of times, and always found it a touch boring and confusing at times. This narration really helps cut through the slow moments and clear up the parts I don’t understand as well. If you like the Hungar Games books, these audios enhance them rather than detract from the writing.
