Historia
Nadia Hashimi's literary debut is a searing tale of powerlessness, fate, and the freedom to control one's own fate that combines the cultural flavor and emotional resonance of the works of Khaled Hosseini, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Lisa See. In Kabul, 2007, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age.

Well-written
Revisado: 03-05-18
The intricate intertwining of the stories of these brave, strong women against the backdrop of a war-torn nation where women are treated as second class citizens is compelling. Hearing their triumphs as well as the progress made for and through them is incredible.

Historia
In this powerful and gripping novel, Sharon Dogar explores what this might have been like from Peters point of view. What was it like to be forced into hiding with Anne Frank, first to hate her and then to find yourself falling in love with her? Especially with your parents and her parents all watching almost everything you do together. To know youre being written about in Anne's diary, day after day? What's it like to start questioning your religion, wondering why simply being Jewish inspires such hatred?

Great Addition, but too much romance.
Revisado: 07-30-17
This story was a great addition to those who would like to understand the lives of the Franks and their friends better. At times, the story read like a romance novel. Of course, this was written about a teenage boy, but it could have spent less time discussing his sexual fantasies. Overall, I think that the author did a great job demonstrating the multi-faceted lives of her characters. The narrator did a very good job along with the rest of the cast. My only complaint is that he seemed a bit broody. But again, this was about a teenage boy.

Beautiful Story
Revisado: 06-12-17
The author's depiction of the war and injustices faced by the Jews is shocking, convicting, and devastating. It is very well done. The story within the story is craftily written as allegory. The surface story left something to be desired, in my opinion, but the redemptive ending was satisfying.

Historia
This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Long but good
Revisado: 12-21-16
the narrator does a fantastic job at distinguishing between characters and his reading. The story is very good and speaks to the nature of mankind in an interesting way. It is, however, very long and a bit convoluted.
