I had no idea anyone could chop this play to bits. I am going to erase it from my library - I don’t want anyone to think I listened to this bastardized version of a great play. Most horrible!

I didn’t think it was possible to make Napoleon’s life boring. Should I need a sleeping pill in the future I’ll just play this audiobook again. I don’t even want to waste another minute giving a review and it’s a shame for I am a true francophile and love history. Give me Barbara Tuchman - I’ll re-read her works over and over again. I wish I had not wasted a credit on this bio.

The very good start to compel the reader to learn more about ornithology and to begin a new hobby as well as conservation efforts that are needed.

The physics maxim that states, “no two things can occupy the same place, at the same time”. Brilliant of Pushkin to use this statement which foreshadows Herman’s doom when the old countess replaces the thought in his mind when he plays his third card, and her “spirit” lets the diabolical thought of the Countess occupy his mind when he should have been paying attention to the card he was playing.

I loved the resiliency of man, woman, and horse. Excellent work.. it’s the first book since I was a little girl that I could not put down and I’ve read some great great literature. This was more than I can commit to paper. It was so wonderful.

I’m so jealous of first time readers of this wonderful story. I read it so many times as a teenager, and each time I enjoyed it but, in a way, it’s like an addict who is always chasing that first high, I find myself wanting to have the experience of reading it for the first time again. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book for all people of all ages and whether it’s your first time or 20th time pick up this book and have a go. The experience is incomparable.

Professor Vandiver is by far the greatest teacher I have ever encountered and quite possibly ever shall. It was 10 years ago when I found The Teaching Company’s Great Courses at our public library. I checked out Ms.Vandiver’s The Iliad and The Odyssey and was hooked. I loved the sound of her voice, I started with The Odyssey and was glad I did because her explanation of the concept of Xenia in ancient Greek culture clarified so many things for me. Up until that time I had traveled many times to Paris and other museums and saw paintings that were beautiful in their own right, but I knew I was missing so much of the stories behind some of the world’s finest paintings and art. The Judgement of Paris always sounded like some dude had gotten himself into a world of trouble, but the images of him sitting with beautiful women didn’t mesh with my half-a—-ed explanation. Then, I got home that first day with my library treasures in hand and started listening to Professor Vandiver —- and the world opened up to me. Suddenly, I understood so much. She was so right about Xenia being an important cultural notion - that’s not a strong enough word - I guess concept might best describe this idea the best - anyway Xenia was the driving force to the entire reason the Greeks ever had to launch a gigantic army to reclaim Helen. And the more Professor explained about the suitors bugging Penelope, the story of Odysseus blinding the eye of Polyphemus and countless other stories, the more the literary canon opened up to me. In time, my understanding grew of Joyce’s Ulysses and so much more.
I ultimately was able to purchase The Iliad and The Odyssey audio from The Teaching Company and then I acquired a DVD and could see Professor Vandiver as I listened to her velvety voice. And now here I am listening to her on Audible. I have just finished The Iliad; it’s 4:37 in the morning but before I go to sleep I will purchase The Odyssey.

I have recommended her to just about everyone I know - I don’t know how many people have taken me up on my suggestion that they do themselves a huge favor and just take a few hours of their life to open up doors they can’t begin to imagine. All I can say to my Audible friends is to order Professor Vandiver’s The Odyssey (start there) and go on an amazing journey that will continue for the rest of your lives.

My only regret is I’ve never been able to sit in a real classroom and hear one of her lectures and I would love to hear her read/sing the I and O in ancient Greek. WOW - that would be something.

There is probably a lot I am leaving out of this review, especially because I didn’t discuss The Iliad very much, but I felt compelled to encourage you to understand xenia before you engage on the wrath of Achilles. It will make so much more sense - for the entire story.
