Ever wondered how it all began? It’s two years since the final victory at the Battersea Barricades. The fighting might be finished, but for Dr Bairstow, just now setting up St Mary's, the struggle is only beginning. How will he assemble his team? From where will his funding come?

Excellent author...as a narrator???
Revisado: 10-20-22
Ms. Taylor is an excellent author and I have truly enjoyed reading her work! As a narrator?? Not so much. Perhaps everyone would pale when compared to Ms. Ramm? It's always difficult when you get used to one narrator of a series and another is substituted. I've had that experience with other book series when the original narrator is either not available or has (sadly) passed away (R.I.P. Katherine Kellgren). In any event, Ms. Taylor should probably stick to writing and let Ms. Ramm do the narrating. Other than that, I enjoyed delving into the history of St. Mary's!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

New York Times best-selling author Laurie R. King has won sweeping critical acclaim and an impressive collection of awards for her writing. Although other writers have tried, no one has matched King's ability to capture the allure of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary sleuth, Sherlock Holmes.

Best of the series so far!
Revisado: 09-14-21
It took a while for me to warm up to this series. I almost stopped after the first book but hung in there. Very glad I did!
I loved hearing more about Mary's background and it was heartwarming to see how Holmes quietly adores his young wife. The sheer number of characters in this story takes some keeping track of, but well worth the effort as each contributes an important tidbit to the storyline.
I've become used to the narrator - although her American accents all sound the same and I can assure you that, in reality, that is not the case!
The deeper I go into this series, the more I enjoy it!

This book hits on several levels
Revisado: 04-19-21
Wow! This book has it all. Even though it is set during the Great Depression, it has touched on every hot button issue of current times....Climate change, Immigration, Economic Inequity, Labor Unions, Woman's Rights & Worker's Rights.
Well researched and beautifully written, the book focuses on Elsa. Overlooked and unloved as a child by her family, she finds herself in the middle of a life or death struggle to keep her family alive during the Depression. Her relationship with her own daughter reflects all the insecurities of her own upbringing and her desire to do better for her own children.
The description of life in the Dust Bowl and in the migrant field worker camps was astonishing.
Some parts brought me to tears, particularly the way people treated Immigrants and "Oakies". Too bad we haven't learned much 90 years.

Historia
In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves by whatever means necessary. This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She'll need to claim her own power to save herself - and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

It took a few chapters to get into to...
Revisado: 07-15-20
I almost gave up after the first chapter, but having read some earlier reviews, stuck with it. After about the third chapter, I started to ignore the narrator's horrible American accents and was able to focus on the story - which was very good! I am rather hoping the author will continue this storyline in another book...

Sound effects are not necessary!
Revisado: 11-15-19
What is up with the sound effects? They take away from the story and a good narrator does not need them. What happened to Scott Brick?
The story was very good - typical of this series - however, the narrator did not add to it.
