Dubious Heroine
Revisado: 08-16-24
A supposedly very bright woman chooses to hide things from her husband that I found incredibly dumb. She continued making questionable decisions regarding the truth, couching each decision in melodrama. I sped up the narration to get to the end. I guessed who the bad guy was early on (can we say “roofie”) and found the surprise ending unbelievable. I.e, I didn’t believe it.

Disappointing Listen
Revisado: 07-27-22
My husband and I could not listen to this book beyond the first hour or so. The narration was truly dreadful. Mary Louise Parker demonstrated her agility with a Southern accent in Fried Green Tomatoes, but gave neither of the southern protagonists any accent at all.. In fact, her reading was so flat, it was difficult to discern any difference between the two women. I once saw the great reader/narrator George Guidall speak at our local library. When asked, he said only two authors had ever had him audition; one was Elie Weisel and the other was John Grisham. This Audible book makes me think he didn't audition MLP but simply relied on her acting reputation.

Historia
When another resident of the Rosemary House care home is found dead in her chair one Saturday evening in December, no one is very surprised - not until the results of a routine post-mortem reveal something extraordinary. Sergeant DC Smith and his team have to tread carefully as they investigate what took place, and Smith himself has to confront some difficult memories. Others, meanwhile, seem intent on getting him to leave the force altogether.

Lovely listen
Revisado: 11-27-21
After reading the Eden Street series, I searched for more books by Peter Grainger. Somehow I had missed the prior series by him, the DC Smith series. I really enjoyed But for the Grace, from the storyline to the pacing. I look forward to reading/listening my way through the DC Smith stories.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Beyond Precocious
Revisado: 10-16-19
Certainly, I don’t want The Institute to be accurate but I know that many are smarter than I and I believe many more psychically gifted. Ergo, it’s easy to suspend disbelief and enthusiastically buy into this engaging tale. Those spooky Maine woods were the ideal setting. Too, I appreciated Mr. King’s name check of some of my favorite characters from other authors. I hated for it to end (but did it, really?)

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Timely Allegory
Revisado: 11-14-18
Listened for book club and was so very glad I did. Having follow up discussion was very helpful in understanding some aspects of this book that is quite relevant to our world today. From a radical conservative group’s insidious destruction of personal freedom to the protagonist’s escaping from the same, I found it informative and interesting. Took a little getting used to the author narration, but I soon was engrossed in his story and his performance. #immigration #selfdiscovery #radicalism #depressing #inspiring #disbeliefsuspension #holywar #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Pinion, Minnesota: a metropolis of all of 700 souls. Nothing ever happened there - until the mayor of sorts (campaign slogan: "I'll Do What I Can") and a buddy come up with a scheme to put Pinion on the map. And all those pilgrims needed food, shelter, all kinds of crazy things, right? They'd all get rich! What could go wrong? When the dead body shows up, they find out, and that's only the beginning of their troubles - and Virgil Flowers'....

As a longtime Virgil Flowers fan, I save these listens for challenging bicycle rides. Virgil and co. Rode along with me on the Katy Trail across Missouri and definitely eased those long days in the saddle. Conger captures characters to a T and does such fabulous job keeping the tone of his reading in tune with the mood of the book. As always, the only thing I dislike is that it must end. #mystery #quirky #witty #virgilflowers ThatF’ingFlowers #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

A pampered Long Island princess hits the road in a converted bus with her wilderness-loving husband, travels the country for one year, and brings it all hilariously to life in this offbeat and romantic memoir. Doreen and Tim are married psychiatrists with a twist: She’s a self-proclaimed Long Island princess, grouchy couch potato, and shoe addict. He's an affable, though driven, outdoorsman.

Wining and Whining on the Road
Revisado: 11-13-17
Premise of story is good and many of the anecdotes are fun. However, I found the heroine quite annoying (I don't suffer whiners gladly). I kept wanting to tell her to buck up and shut up. And, if you didn't know she was an M.D., just wait and she'll remind you every chapter...
The narrator did a good job but I do hate it when someone mispronounces a fairly iconic place name, i.e., Mt. Katahdin, incorrectly. It is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. And, the narrator did a great impression of a whining voice.

Hard to Care
Revisado: 06-28-17
I tried hard to like this book, thinking it would get better as it moved along. Alas, I have given up my listen after a couple of hours in. The protagonist did not engage me, the story lost me and I wasted the money/credit I spent on this.

Wanted to Love This
Revisado: 02-02-17
What disappointed you about The Bette Davis Club?
The protagonist was beyond irritating, from her pretentious English accent (yes, I know she spent 6 years in England...30 years ago) to her constant dithering over the smallest things. Every time I thought she was going to finally engage me with some maturity and common sense, she reverted to her irritating habits. Also, the important meaning behind the title was not revealed until fairly late in the story, thanks to the jumping around of the timeline.
Has The Bette Davis Club turned you off from other books in this genre?
I have enjoyed some books in this genre but I will certainly do a more thorough read of reviews before I buy another one.
What aspect of Sue Pitkin and Tessa Marts ’s performance would you have changed?
To be honest, I couldn't really tell there were two performers.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment that I wasted over ten hours listening to this drivel.
Any additional comments?
I don't write reviews very often and I hesitated writing this due to the heartfelt introduction of this book by the late author's daughter. However, I thought it incumbent that I let other Audible customers know what they might be in for. If a listener is into beautiful, somewhat helpless females, then she might enjoy this.

After the events in Gathering Prey, Lucas Davenport finds himself in a very unusual situation - no longer employed by the Minnesota BCA. His friend, the governor, is just cranking up a presidential campaign, though, and he invites Lucas to come along as part of his campaign staff. "Should be fun!" he says, and it kind of is - until they find they have a shadow: an armed man intent on killing the governor...and anyone who gets in the way.

Welcome Back, Lucas!
Revisado: 08-18-16
I loved Lucas Davenport's return to my Audible library. With characters who are intelligent, clever, devious, and a sometimes a bit off, Sandfprd kept me engaged throughout the main story as well as the sub plots. I especially appreciated his inclusion of several senior characters who were central to the book and not portrayed as tottering grey-haired, cookie-baking (loved the pies, though) old ladies. I hated to finish this great read with Richard Ferrone's fabulous narration.
