Love this book. Actually enjoyed the progression even more than the first one, though there is a little of the plague of books and movies: incomprehensible lack of communication leading to unnecessary conflicts. But that is a common storytelling device, so 🤷♀️. Wonderful performance by Tim Gerard Reynolds as always.
Can’t wait for the next one (which I can seem to find nothing about)

I hope to never hear "witch man" again
Revisado: 10-27-23
I remember getting tired during my previous reading of the Seeker series.... after a LOT of books.
However, this is just ridiculous. It's like he told someone who wasn't much of a writer the story and let them write it. Then, no one edited it.
SO MUCH redundant language. I never want to hear the phrase "witch man" again. So awkward. Why couldn't he just use "witch" in the majority of the story once he had made it clear it was a man? Even "witch woman" is overused, not quite as much.
So many pointless and redundant info dumps.
So many annoying actions that either don't match the character's personality or don't fit the scene/relationships in play.
I'm not sorry to have read this and will finish the series, but very disappointed in how grating it is to get the actual story.
All that being said, I would still suggest it if you like epic fantasy. And you don't have to know the whole Seeker story, I'd say you get enough in these short ones for everything to make sense.
I like the narrator, but the failings in the writing might be easier to handle if you were reading the words and could skim the annoying bits. :)

Prepare for a chilling journey from a ruined church in Philadelphia, where the spirit that lurks is far from benign to a Prohibition-era New Orleans jazz club, where a young man finds the love of his life - if he can live through the night; from a Detroit cemetery, where teenaged rituals have unforeseen consequences to a deserted beach in an unknown place, where two sisters let the ocean decide their fate...

Beneath Lausanne Cathedral, in Switzerland, there is a secret buried before time began.... Marc Rochat watches over the city at night from the belfry of the cathedral. He lives in a world of shadows and "beforetimes" and imaginary beings. Katherine Taylor, call girl and daydreamer, is about to discover that her real-life fairy tale is too good to be true. Jay Harper, private detective, wakes up in a crummy hotel room with no memory. Three lives, one purpose: save what's left of paradise before all hell breaks loose.

Great in spite of some weaknesses
Revisado: 03-11-21
This is a very difficult book to review.
I really really liked it. I almost want to say I loved it! And yet, there were things about it that were ... problematic for me.
It starts slowly. For someone coming out of listening to a lot of action heavy fantasy and short, quick thrillers, this took some patience. Also, there is a lot of French and I believe Italian. Though it was spoken beautifully by the narrator, it was often not translated and you just had to sort of guess at the point of the phrase.
The world-building, scenically, is lovely. It made me want to GO THERE!
The storyline is great, once it gets going. The everlasting war between good and evil, secret books of the Bible that explain more about the Angels who came to Earth before the great flood, etc, a mix of ancient and modernity. Loved all of this!
Character development... meh. First, the women in this story are few (4 primaries, and that's really counting one who is a minor character because I know she becomes a major character later) and very 2 dimensional. They are air-headed, over-sexed, over-sexualized, and avaricious, or madonna-like perfect and vague. Oh, or military automatons with no personality at all. Their value is completely in their ability to give pleasure, or create/give life. I am hoping to see a big change in this in book 2. Second, the hero character is a little too "Quasimodo". It's actually remarked on several times. He's very much the Handicapped Hero trope, and although I really liked him, I would have like to see a wider range of emotions allowed for him. Even good, angelic people still have frustration, anger, hurt feelings, infatuation that's not 100% pure, etc. Last, the anti-hero, Harper, is great, but there are too many things unexplained about his transformation. He doesn't ask enough questions at the right places, and once he starts figuring things out, the link between his mind and his emotions doesn't really seem to work the way the storyline claims it should. (can't explain without spoiling)
My final issue is that although some of the writing is FANTASTIC, there is a lot of redundancy. I feel like the editor should have done a much better job. Marc's cat is constantly called "the beast". A million times in a few short pages. Some synonyms would have been awesome! And then there is the use of the word "half-breed". Although in the context it was used it makes a kind of sense to explain the utter wrongness that is felt by the rest of the characters, it is WAY overused, especially in the fight scenes at the end. In fact, I wish that he had just coined a completely new word that their type used for them, or called them monsters, or something else. It was VERY off-putting.
All of this being said, I really did enjoy this book. It is otherworldly while still being very much an action/crime/detective story and also you could stop here and be happy, or keep reading the rest of the series.. it doesn't end on a cliffhanger.

Something for Everyone
Revisado: 01-13-20
Susan May has quickly become one of my favorite current authors! I enjoy the variability of her stories, the fact that her characters are not only multi-faceted, but often aren't even particularly likable, and are therefore more real. They also are more able to show growth and development throughout a story because we see more aspects of their personality.
This book has a great variety of stories and characters. Some are science fiction, others feel like thrillers with a darkly comic twist.
Lucky this Time is about a man who tries to have complete control over his life, but who controls luck?
Beyont is about a cruise ship with an unfortunate stowaway.
Soul Survivor is a story about AI, but also about what would you do for your child?
Salvation is an alternate reality in which no one ever questioned Creationism...yet.
291 is about a cop and his scary car.
Drift is a prequel to The Troubles Keeper, and just left me wanting the next novel so that I can figure out how it all fits together!
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 (I'd give 4 1/2 if I could), is that I thought a couple of the stories needed just a touch more editing. They really had me for awhile, then ALMOST started to lose me right before culminating in the final twist or climax.
*I was provided a free Audible copy of the book by the author. This is my honest review.*

Historia
What if all that stood between us and hell was a match? An ordinary couple stand accused of a heinous crime. They're the last people you'd expect to save the world. Are they criminals, heroes, or completely insane? Or maybe all three? Inspired by true-life headlines, revealed in Susan May's fascinating postscript From the Imagination Vault, Behind the Fire is an engrossing novelette of the random appearances of frightening black things, and one couple's battle to protect their town from these dangerous and hellish creatures.

How far would YOU go?
Revisado: 09-30-19
I loved this story! It was original and engaging! A young couple in a mining town has been caught engaging in arson, have been put on trial, and admit to being guilty. But WHY? The reasoning is mind-boggling. The characters are well-written, but given in broad strokes, as this is a short story. As with all of Susan May’s story-telling, there is some tragedy, some romance, and even a touch of confusion about what makes one’s behavior “villainous”. I can’t wait to read the novel she has promised to write later that will give us more information about “the rest of the story”. The narration is top-notch, and the author's description of how the story came about made it even more interesting.

This was not the first-time that rookie cop Michael Chambers had found himself stuck in this broken-down police vehicle while the rain bucketed down outside. In fact, this kind of "bad luck" had happened almost every time he’d been assigned car 291. Usually, he’d get a flat, or the locks would jam, or the damned on-board computer would freeze. 291, though, had a bloody and tragic history, which might explain why this piece of metallic crap seemed so intent on driving him crazy - excuse the pun.

Does This Car Need a "Worthy" Cop?
Revisado: 09-24-19
A scary car…with a twist!
What would you do if you weren’t very happy in your new job, and on top of that, the one piece of equipment that you had to use constantly apparently HATED you? Not just any job, but one you had to work hard for, invest of yourself and your time to get, and had a lot of personal identity and self-worth tied into, so you felt like you couldn’t just walk away… Susan May has given us a main character that we may not exactly like, but as time goes, we can definitely feel for. And..I didn’t expect to laugh, but I did.
This is a quick story that keeps you listening.
Great narration!

Another Great Susan May Book!
Revisado: 09-20-19
I greatly enjoyed The Troubles Keeper. A thriller with some science-fiction, tragedy, and romance thrown in, it's another great story by Susan May. Our main character, Rory, is a little simple, super sweet, and very gifted... more than he even realizes. He is also in the sights of something dark and scary.
Susan May always gives a lot of interesting bits of true or nearly true information (fun stuff to Google!). The character development is good, though I would have liked a deeper understanding of both our villain and Rory. I was hoping for more answers about the villain's "goal", but I have a feeling that may come later, and so I'm excited to see what comes next for this cast of characters.
I really liked this Audible narrator!

The terror begins in a suburban café with seven people brutally murdered by an axe-wielding maniac. The killer is left dead at the scene and that should have been the end of a rare tragedy. But within days, in the very same city, more mass killings occur. Ten eldercare facility residents die in an arson-lit blaze. Then a mother attending a family gathering embarks on a terrifying gun rampage. All the killers are now dead, leaving behind unanswerable questions.

Making “Sense” of the Unthinkable
Revisado: 09-18-19
This is another great story by one of my new favorite authors, Susan May. Here she has tackled something most of us have wondered about: the seeming explosion of mass killings in the past couple of decades. Woven in with a truly terrifying idea for why some of it is happening, are the stories of several people who have experienced terrible loss, and how those losses have affected them and their interactions with others. It changes their perceptions, their intentions, and their purpose. You will care about all of them, you can’t help it. Susan reminds us that we are all the hero in our own story, really.
