Historia
Summer has come to Niflheim. The lichens are growing, the six-winged bat-things are chirping, and much to his own surprise, Mickey Barnes is still alive—that last part thanks almost entirely to the fact that Commander Marshall believes that the colony’s creeper neighbors are holding an antimatter bomb, and that Mickey is the only one who’s keeping them from using it. Mickey’s just another colonist now. Instead of cleaning out the reactor core, he spends his time these days cleaning out the rabbit hutches. It’s not a bad life. It’s not going to last.

What a performance
Revisado: 04-13-25
A tour de force of a performance that enhances the text. Recommended for those who want to delve deeply into ideas of reincarnation and identity.

Historia
It’s the early 1990s in Glasgow, Scotland, and Stephen has emerged from a lengthy hospital stay. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, a little-understood disease which has robbed him of any prospects of work, friends, or independent living, he moves slowly toward new goals and meets others like him, including Richard, a friend from school, and Carrie, a young woman bedridden for five years. Feeling isolated and alone, they form their own support group, and try to get by with as little money and pain as possible.

Reality of ME
Revisado: 03-13-25
As someone with severe ME who was a musician before I became severe, I was moved by this account by Murdoch by what a less severe form other disease is like. Murdoch’s performance itself, feels like a gift, knowing that it took energy to read and share this account with us. ME can go into remission and can go through periods of lesser and greater impact on the individual experiencing it. I think this is clear in the telling of the book, though I do wonder how it would be perceived for someone reading from the outside with no knowledge of ME. That side, the tenderness, and the truth of the lived experience as someone trying to find themselves a new amidst this awful disease resonated. Thank you for this gift to the ME community, Stuart Murdoch.

Historia
A woman describes a series of encounters she has with various people in the ordinary course of her life: an ex she runs into by chance at a public forum, an Airbnb owner unsure how to interact with her guests, a stranger who seeks help comforting his elderly mother, a friend of her youth now hospitalized with terminal cancer. In each of these people, the woman finds a common need: the urge to talk about themselves and to have an audience to their experiences.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 01-09-25
Told in a straightforward and yet richly layered voice, this novel contemplates what it means to live, and what it means to die, and what it means to be remembered. As someone who has a chronic disease that also has no cure I found the portrait of what it means to be sick in a world that only has room for the able-bodied and the well poignantly accurate. The narration gives a quiet, reflective, and yet nuanced cadence to this exquisitely written, writerly novel.

Perfect New Year Listen
Revisado: 01-02-25
I’ve been waiting for this book to come out in English for sometime after falling in love with anime and reading all of the rest of Miura’s works That are in English. I was thrilled that Brian Nishii was the narrator because I adore all of his narrations. This is a cozy compelling listen for those who like a kind of slice of life read. It sucks you and Sallie and slowly with thoughtful character development and detailed research about running. I really recommend watching the anime after!

Historia
In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

Sex heavy
Revisado: 07-17-24
I expected a more articulate and compelling narrative, but this is just a book about sex and having it. As someone who is fully disabled and unable to have sex this text feels and accessible and about a kind of navel gazing approach to the body that feels exclusive Of those of us who are not able bodied

Historia
Yuki Hirano is just out of high school when his parents enroll him, against his will, in a forestry training program in the remote mountain village of Kamusari. No phone, no internet, no shopping. Just a small, inviting community where the most common expression is “take it easy.” At first, Yuki is exhausted, fumbles with the tools, asks silly questions, and feels like an outcast. Kamusari is the last place a city boy from Yokohama wants to spend a year of his life. But as resistant as he might be, the scent of the cedars and the staggering beauty of the region have a pull.
