Historia
She over 50, feisty, and oh so good at solving mysteries. Patricia Fisher is not your average woman. To start with she lives in a 73-room manor house and travels with a Jamaican butler who is part ninja and fakes his Downton Abbey accent. Then add to those facts that she just opened a private investigations business and throw in the worrying bit where people keep trying to kill her. When a climber suspiciously falls to his death and a local artist has her dog stolen, Patricia finds herself investigating two cases that seem to have no motive and no clues.

Narrator’s cadence put me off
Revisado: 06-14-24
While the narrator did fine with the tone of the voices, the cadence for all the characters was so off putting I had to struggle to finish the book.

Historia
Wally Roux is a teenage genius with a big imagination and a big heart, who just moved to Savannah, GA, from Maine with his mom, who adopted him when he was an infant. In this charming and sweet solo performance, Wally investigates what is causing a number of strange events and occurrences. He explores and gets lost within space-time - an infinite, indefinable, and mysterious void that you can’t see but when you slice into it you can feel it.

Wish audio books had a rating system
Revisado: 09-23-19
The narrator was fabulous but the language was so unnecessary for the story that I just couldn't complete the book. I really wish audio books had a rating system so that you would at least be a little prepared for what you hear.

A new favorite
Revisado: 09-06-19
The more I listened to this series, the more I realized how much I loved it. This is a quiet little gem of a series that I am glad I found. The switch in narrators was at first disappointing but I actually grew to like Andrew Peterson's narration even more than the original narrator, especially with certain characters.

My new favorite Charles Martin book
Revisado: 03-18-17
I first discovered Charles Martin with the book "When Crickets Cry" and I was hooked. I immediately searched out his other works. I have really liked all of his books, but Crickets was still my favorite...until now. A redemption tale with plenty of suspense that kept me in my car way more than I wanted to just to finish the story. Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry

Narration not my favorite
Revisado: 03-30-16
What disappointed you about The Fearful Gates?
The tone of the book seemed so different from the 1st in the series. Good guys maybe weren't good guys. Bad guys - were they really bad? It almost felt like it belonged in another series entirely. One of the main characters went through a transformation from being pretty violent to not at all, which I understand was part of the character arc, but it seemed way too quick and not realistic. Something was missing. It could be I just couldn't get past the narration and missed some of the nuances.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator really ruined the book for me. While his different character voices were okay, whenever he was reading just narration I cringed, sometimes literally. It's hard to describe but it seemed like he raised the pitch of his voice higher and made it feel unnatural. I probably would have enjoyed the actual story a lot more if I could have gotten past that. I made it through the book but I will not be listening again.
