Love the story/series
Revisado: 04-24-23
While I did notice the change in narrators, it wasn’t hugely glaring. It did pass the “loved the first 2 but then it was a bunch of rehash” hurdle. The plot thickened, the characters changed/grew, and new characters where pivotal.
This series is a whole world with disparate (many) factions engaging in both physical conflict and metaphysical ones that span several books rather than one good idea/book subsequently stretched into multiple books because the first one was good.
Loved the multiple POVs, the main character is female who is fierce and capable without being stupidly rash and swaggering. Some gender bending as gods do and a spotlight on the ridiculousness of sexual discriminations.
The first book was a freebie in Audible and I found the next 2 at libraries but I bought this 4th one and will use my next credit for the 5th. The marketing really worked here and I’m so glad I checked it out.
These are going on my read—it-again shelf for when I’m waiting for holds/credits and need something comfortable to revisit. Only books that are well written, have good flow and I don’t feel the need to yell at the stupidity of the plot “movers” go on this shelf.

Historia
Touched by a very public tragedy, musician Rob Quillen comes to Cloud County, Tennessee, in search of a song that might ease his aching heart. All he knows of the mysterious and reclusive Tufa is what he has read on the Internet: They are an enigmatic clan of swarthy, black-haired mountain people whose historical roots are lost in myth and controversy. Some say that when the first white settlers came to the Appalachians centuries ago, they found the Tufa already there. Others hint that Tufa blood brings special gifts....

Just as good as the first Tufa story!
Revisado: 12-22-22
Great characters and deft usage of Fae folklore in a “new world” adaptation. It’s engaging and as multi-layered as the first one (Hum & Shiver).
I listen to books and usually listen twice to really get all the details. This one got 3 listens and a total of 5 listens for the last 5 chapters. There are lots of complex characters and an even more complex bubble world of old world Fae transplanting to Appalachia.
I’m going back to Hum & Shiver with the knowledge gained here to understand more of the deep currents. That is the sign of a great series.
-* the next in this series takes place after an installment about Bran-wyn’s life. Time work differently for some people but fortunately there is a way to find the next chronological story in a companion series.

Loved this cosmere novella!
Revisado: 09-07-22
Some of my favorite characters on exciting adventure of course made me an eager reader. While I agree with other reviewers wishing it was longer, it did have a satisfying storyline with a future of significant impact in the Cosmere.

It's the end of the 19th century in San Francisco's Chinatown, and ghost hunters from the Maoshan traditions of Daoism keep malevolent spiritual forces at bay. Li-lin, the daughter of a renowned Daoshi exorcist, is a young widow burdened with yin eyes - the unique ability to see the spirit world. Her spiritual visions and the death of her husband bring shame to Li-lin and her father - and shame is not something this immigrant family can afford.

Interesting story but too much repetitive self talk
Revisado: 10-19-21
I gave up listening with 5 chapters to go because I was tired of the litany of how her father treated her, how she wouldn’t hide again but keep fighting and the high strung emotional delivery of the endless internal monologue.

Cover art is super misleading - this is not about a curly-haIred floozy!
Revisado: 08-09-21
This is an amazing 4 book series and I’ve read it 3 times now because there is so much depth and foreshadowing that each reading offers up another depth of understanding.
Given that masterful level of writing, it is amazing how absolutely wrong the Amazon book art is. The main character has very short, straight, blond hair and spends her days WORKING, not flouncing around in fancy clothes.
I am grateful to another reviewer that urged me not to judge these books by their cover because it is SO misleading.
The world building is amazing, the characters are good but flawed, the magic has an interesting connection to our physics and THERE ARE DRAGONS!!!
I “read” audiobooks and this series of mostly in the Plus Catalogue (July/Aug 2021). I think I bought the 3rd one. The narrator is excellent and, like I said, these are a pleasure to read multiple times to make connections forshadowed in each book.
I am really looking forward to the next installment as this is a robust world that spans 4 centuries with many developed characters.

Great short story, psychological thriller
Revisado: 08-07-21
The author has done an amazing job using only phone calls & voicemails for dialog to create a compelling story with great character development. On the surface it is a snapshot of the tension between a mother’s traditional Indian values and an American raised daughter with a career and more western values.
Underneath is a darker, malignant force that must be stopped.

Don’t judge the cover art! This is an excellent series
Revisado: 08-05-21
This is book 3 in the “Truth” series and I think it’s the best one so far. It is currently in the Audible Plus catalog - along with all the others in the series but the cover art is super misleading. I think the main character has super straight hair, for instance. Also, that is not what kestrels look like.
This might be classified as Young Adult fantasy but the only because the main character is 17-18. The older (like centuries older) characters (DRAGONS!) are still very well developed and have a growth arc in their stories.
This 3rd book cleverly has time travel to show what the world was like 400 yrs prior to the first 2 and shows what things were like when the Hold & nearby city were fully populated. This also opens up a way to explain the 3 human populations, why there is such enmity between them - esp between the plains & foothills and why halfbreeds are hated.
This series is amazingly well developed in terms of world building, characters and time line. It’s the kind of series where you can read again & get more of the subtleties and foreshadowing.
