Historia
When a body is found beside the Roman Fort Gate on the London Wall, dressed as a Roman Soldier and with an antique Roman Gladius stabbed into their chest, it's tasked to DCI Declan Walsh and the team of the Last Chance Saloon to investigate the murder, leading them into a rabbit hole of similarly themed attacks - as re-enactors perform real-life battles at various locations for a "History of London" celebration during the day, with some taking a darker and more brutal approach at night.

Each of these books feels like watching a season of a really incredible TV show. The perfect combination of talented writer and unmatched voice actor creates an experience unlike anything else I can find. I’m so glad that there are more!

Historia
East London, 1888 - a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores, and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at night, where bright hopes meet the darkest truths. Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger's son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

If you want to be repeatedly depressed for 23 hours I guess this is your jam. It’s a weird jam. Like vegemite with a sprinkle of consumption.

Following the bombshell ending of Kill Your Darlings, Declan Walsh has a new job, a new office and a new remit—but when a City of London art gallery discovers the star of their latest exhibition dead, with only a signed, painted "kiss" on his neck to go on, Declan and his team must investigate a murder that involves brutal vengeance, a family linked to a painting stolen by the Nazis in WW2, and a long-forgotten promise.

The absolute best
Revisado: 06-19-24
This series is spectacular. Gatland has mastered the art of storytelling, with each scene playing out like a well-made heist film, complete with a ragtag cast of characters that we understand, if not love.
The stories can dip into allegory, but often in ways that are hidden right in front of you until the very end. It's clear he views his audience and sharp and intelligent, making the reader feel like a background actor involved in each scene.
Gatland's passion for the medium comes through as he positively captivates with each story, a collections deserves to easily become "the next big series."
It's been a marvelous escape from the real world and I can't wait for the next volume.

Historia
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Let’s Further Stigmatize Illness??
Revisado: 06-02-24
Absolutely reckless in using illnesses as a plot device, with no regard for anyone that has any type of diagnosis.
It turned me off of this author entirely.
I just wish I’d known before I started the book so I could have skipped it.

Exactly What I Needed
Revisado: 03-22-23
This is the perfect bit of escapism for anyone who loves true crime...but sometimes needs a break from the true.
It's a kind tribute to and unique revival of the radio play, and an immersive experience for anyone who can't go to a Broadway play or Murder Mystery dinner.
Performances were amazing throughout, and one of the coolest experiences I've had through Audible.

In her new book, Rosenberg addresses the overlooked and offbeat issues of mental illness, shedding light on topics that are off limits, uncomfortable, or just downright embarrassing. This book details every challenging and awkward stage of Amanda's journey with mental illness and how she manages what she calls her "garden variety crazy."

I've spoken constantly of this book from the moment I started listening to it. I empathize in ways I didn't know I could and have grown (at least a bit less lonely) from reading it.
Hearing it in the author's voice made her feel like my friend was sharing this with me.
Highly recommend.

Amazing audiobook
Revisado: 02-09-22
I read this before in physical form, and cannot recommend the audiobook more as a totally unique experience.
Amy is lovely, loving, and genuine, and her team or cohorts make for almost a UCB improv show nestled into the audiobook itself.
An incredible experience from an incredible human being.

The orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousin, Rayber, defy the prophecy of their dead uncle - that Tarwater will become a prophet and will baptize Rayber's young son, Bishop. A series of struggles ensue, as Tarwater fights an internal battle against his innate faith and the voices calling him to be a prophet, while Rayber tries to draw Tarwater into a more “reasonable” modern world. Both wrestle with the legacy of their dead relatives and lay claim to Bishop's soul.

Trigger warnings - but also well read
Revisado: 01-19-22
Woooooof I was not expecting or prepared for something towards the end. Just. Trigger warnings all around.
That said, Mark Bramhall is INCREDIBLE and it was like listening to a Broadway play. He is so amazing, every character felt truthful and unique, and each and every of O'Conner's words felt significant in his voice.
