Improved, but spare me the bathroom humor
Revisado: 07-29-24
This is an improvement over Book 5, with character shown in actions rather than told or spoken between characters. The story is rather too multiźlayered, and the Greek tragedy-esque ending for one arc is excessive. And, for goodness sake, leave out the bathroom humor. B-o-r-i-n-g!

Historia
When a hit-and-run accident leaves eight-year-old Lee Sanders in critical condition, DI Freya Bloom and DS Ben Savage arrive on the scene in rural Lincolnshire. But the investigation they thought would be simple, soon develops into something far more sinister. The driver of the car is found in a nearby ditch, and she didn't die of natural causes. Poppy Gray, a nineteen-year-old girl with a bright future ahead of her, had only one known friend, a troubled boy who rarely speaks. Leading a simple life, Poppy had been filled with the joys of spring. But she knew something.

Leaning too much on stereotypes, the mystery is OK, but characterization is cardboard and childish.

A bit flat for an otherwise fine series
Revisado: 05-08-24
I miss Davina Porter's narration. Also, the presence of anachronistic phrases is jarring enough to abruptly break immersion in the story. I'm not sure when "don't beat yourself up about it" entered everyday discourse, but am fairly certain it wasn't in use in 1815. I'll check the OED later! Anyway, devotion to characters' inferiority is on the wane here, and urgency of action sequences is dampened by Ms. Scanlon's down-tempo narration. Not a fave.

Fair story, potential for characters
Revisado: 04-16-24
Unfortunate to cast a female voice actor for a story populated by mostly male characters. The American from New York (a main character!) has an accent that slides from Virginia to Montana, and it is so distracting!

Outstanding
Revisado: 12-31-23
Penrose deftly weaves the historical moment with her cozy cast of characters, adding links to contemporary issues through a poignant subplot with a key to unlocking ancillary mysteries leading to an explosive conclusion. I find myself frustrated by the depreciating language around historically female concerns, while acknowledging that it is likely historically accurate! Penrose balances appreciative representation of inner-outer, masculine-feminine, active-receptive capacities, even within the constraints of her chosen genre's conventions.

Historia
One advantage of being caught up in a whirl of dress fittings and decisions about flower arrangements is that Charlotte Sloane has little time for any pre-wedding qualms. Her love for Wrexford isn't in question. But will being a wife - and a countess - make it difficult for her to maintain her independence - not to mention, her secret identity as famed satirical artist A. J. Quill? Despite those concerns, there are soon even more urgent matters to attend to during Charlotte and Wrexford's first public outing as an engaged couple.

Historia
Though Charlotte Sloane's secret identity as the controversial satirical cartoonist A. J. Quill is safe with the Earl of Wrexford, she's ill prepared for the rippling effects sharing the truth about her background has cast over their relationship. She thought a bit of space might improve the situation. But when her cousin is murdered and his twin brother is accused of the gruesome crime, Charlotte immediately turns to Wrexford for help in proving the young man's innocence. The brooding scientist is just as enigmatic and intense as ever, but there is now an unfamiliar tension.
