Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Surrealism at its finest
Revisado: 03-31-24
I really enjoyed this book. It's weird. It's mysterious. It's emotional honesty.
To be sure, I would not have this be my first Murakami book if you've never read him before, but I really loved this.

Historia
Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s brutal Medellín Cartel was responsible for trafficking tons of cocaine to North America and Europe in the 1980s and ’90s. The nation became a warzone as his sicarios mercilessly murdered thousands of people - competitors, police, and civilians - to ensure he remained Colombia’s reigning kingpin. With billions in personal income, Pablo Escobar bought off politicians and lawmen, and became a hero to poorer communities by building houses and sports centers.

Not Long Enough
Revisado: 12-18-23
This book is very interesting and it shows more about the lives of the story tellers. However, for how long they were chasing Escobar and the thousands of raids they went on, the details of the process were surprisingly sparse. I have read books on events that took less time that were extensively longer books. I would have loved to hear about how CIs were found or how raids were executed. Not enough detail to really make an addition to the show.

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Not a lot of meat
Revisado: 12-06-23
My only real comment is that if you're going to decry "lived experience" as a source for your opponent, you better come with data. I don't feel that Murray did that.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom.

Kind of a half ending
Revisado: 11-15-23
It's an interesting story and very well told. The end seems to come quite abruptly and does feel like it only sets things up for the other stories to pick up on. I know that this book was written after some of the books that come next in a chronological timeline, but it feels like a strange ending for a lot of the buildup.

Historia
Long before books were mass-produced, hand-copied scrolls made from Nile River reeds were the treasures of the ancient world. Emperors and pharaohs, determined to possess them, dispatched emissaries to the edges of the known world to bring them back. Exploring the deep and fascinating history of the written word, from the oral tradition to scrolls to codices, internationally bestselling author Irene Vallejo shows that books have always been a precious and precarious vehicle for civilization.

A Little Spacey
Revisado: 04-18-23
I loved the information in this book. the anecdotes that the author describes came from years of research and a true passion for the topic. my only complaint is that the content occasionally feels scattered and disjointed.

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Beautiful Style
Revisado: 09-19-22
The writing itself is beautiful and evokes wonderful imagery. The parts that talk about biology are ecology are incredible. Some of the anecdotal stories can be a little meandering, but they mostly all have beautiful messages. The complaints about neoliberalism and capitalism are a little derivative, but I suppose they fit the story being told.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

I cannot fathom the experiences of individuals who lived through the Troubles, but this goes a long way in making the experiences more real. The narrator is incredible and the story is fascinating.
