Another excellent Percy Jackson tale read delightfully

I liked this one even better than the first senior year volume. It’s a tale filled with incredible empathy. These senior year books don’t have the epic scale of the previous series. That doesn’t make them any less exciting. And Percy’s sense of humor and keen observation of human nature shines through in Jesse Bernstein’s performance.

I tend to be very critical of all the kids’ books that show romance between teenagers as something that will last forever—but the truth is that Percy and Annabeth’s relationship is simply beautiful. They have learned such trust of each other and a deep sense of what it means to be partners. And the love that the have with Grover shows that romantic/sexual love isn’t any more powerful, deep, and complicated than close friendship.

Plus, this book really highlights the tender love that Percy has for his mother. Too many kids’ books feature absent parents, neglectful or abusive parents, dying parents. The unreliable adults theme is one that certainly belongs in children’s literature (because those kinds of grownups do exist) but it is refreshing to read stories like these that show parents nurturing their children, trusting them as they grow into their strengths, and helping them understand their experiences and the world around them.

I adore Gail Carriger’s books, both the steampunk and sci-fi tales. The narration on this one drove me crazy. The narrator’s phrasing put in excessively long pauses, which made the whole thing sound stilted and off.

Breezy and silly slow-burn romance continues in this third volume in the series

This fluffy series is entertaining and funny but not particularly substantial. The slow-burn of the romance is frustrating to me. I feel like this book was action-packed but suffered a bit from picking up a few new strands of multi-volume story but not really having as much of a complete plot of its own.

Nothing about this story set in a small Georgia township hit right for me. I felt like the narrator was practically yelling at me the whole time. The main character seems incredibly naive. Most of the side characters are hollow stereotypes, more annoying than endearing. If you want similar stories that feature paranormal tales, romance, and older heroines, I recommend Magical Midlife Madness by K.F. Breene or Molly Harper’s Starfall Point trilogy.

I love John Scalzi, and this light-hearted tale fits right in with works like The Kaiju Preservation Society and Starter Villian. The naive hero of this tale is a recent college graduate who stumbles into infrastructure issues in an Earth city’s human-minority district.

I’ve been rendered practically speechless by the nameless narrator of this fantastical, sensual, and grief-filled book. Miranda July’s slightly raspy voice captures her protagonist’s expanding emotional world as she wakes up from trauma, transgresses the limits of hetero-passing monogamy, and finds her own body in perimenopause. Trigger warnings: Infant mortality and critical illness, suicide or family members, mental illness.

My enjoyment of this book was negatively affected by the reader’s terrible voice work and accents. Percy’s voice is often outright annoying and sounds more surfer dude than is appropriate for someone who’s mostly grown up in New York. Frank sounds like an oaf rather than an intelligent, but brawny guy. (His Canadian accent is at least somewhat passable.) Hazel’s accent isn’t distinctly New Orleans. A Mediterranean demigod sounds vaguely South Asian.

Bridgerton‘s Adjoa Andoh is magnificent reading this exciting tale of reluctant and unlikely heroes navigating a mysterious inter-species conflict involving political intrigue, personality conflicts, xenophobia, and cannibalism.

As with her other series, Molly Harper does a fine job of presenting relatable female characters who find themselves in remarkable, supernatural circumstances and discover new connections to friends and family while hunting magical baddies and falling in love. I particularly like the inclusion of teen character in this volume

I have always wanted a book like this, telling the story of the numerous women woven through and along the edges of the Iliad and Odyssey. As a college student, I loved the Oresteia and other works following up on Homer and giving voice to the women and their sorrows. Natalie Haynes’ reading of her own work drew me in and wrecked me. A transformative book, for sure.
