Tedious hard to listen unnecessarily complex
Revisado: 02-21-24
I just can’t get into this novel. It started out in the first chapter really intriguing, and then by the third chapter hit a brick wall in terms of how tedious and in need of editing down the storyline was. I’m giving up and trying to listen to it. It’s just so into itself . I don’t understand the other high rating.

Historia
On the shores of a tranquil fjord in northern Iceland, a man is brutally beaten to death on a bright summer's night. As the 24-hour light of the arctic summer is transformed into darkness by an ash cloud from a recent volcanic eruption, a young reporter leaves Reykajvik to investigate on her own, unaware that an innocent person's life hangs in the balance. Ari Thor Arason and his colleagues on the tiny police force in Siglufjordur struggle with an increasingly perplexing case, while their own serious personal problems push them to the limit.

In need of some major editing
Revisado: 06-28-23
Too many storylines, timelines and narratives. Feeling disjointed and would work better as several separate novels. Very hard to stick with and follow.

Historia
Two days before Christmas, a young woman is found dead beneath the cliffs of the deserted village of Kalfshamarvik. Did she jump, or did something more sinister take place beneath the lighthouse and the abandoned old house on the remote rocky outcrop? With winter closing in and the snow falling relentlessly, Ari Thor Arason discovers that the victim's mother and young sister also lost their lives in this same spot, 25 years earlier....

This novel belongs as the second in the Dark Iceland collection
Revisado: 06-26-23
This novel belongs is the second in the dark Iceland collection, in terms of the chronology of the main character and his relationship with his wife, etc. In this novel events occur while his wife is still pregnant with their first child.
In the novel that is listed as the second in the series. The child is about a year old and also some other plot points that follow from White Out are addressed. I don’t know why White Out considered the fifth out of the sixth in the series. It is a bit confusing.

DI Marshall sanctimonious and stupid
Revisado: 04-30-23
DJ Marshall was extremely difficult to take. He was sanctimonious, stupid, self-absorbed. Detective Elliot rather than coming across as a hard boiled detective came across as extremely unlikable and nasty. I will not proceed with this series.

The main character was infuriatingly. Stupid!
Revisado: 04-10-23
From the very beginning, the protagonist was not only infuriatingly stupid and a pathological liar. I swear it was really hard getting through this book! Character development is awful. I actually was rooting for the antagonist! But even the antagonist’s character was awfully developed. I strongly do not recommend this read. It’s an infuriating waste of time.

Historia
In the small mining town of Malmberget, north of the Arctic Circle, residents and their houses are being relocated. As the mine that built the town slowly swallows it street by street, building by building, the memories of the community have collapsed into the huge pit they call “the hole.” Only a few stubborn souls cling to their homes, refusing to leave. When two workers making their final preparations hear a sound coming from a basement, they break a cellar window and find a terrified man curled up in a corner.

I found the narrator hard to listen to
Revisado: 01-16-23
I found the narrator hard to listen to, and I tried several times, but in the end I ended up returning the book.
I didn’t really get far enough in the book to have a real opinion on the story but a star rating is required to submit a review.

I think this book may have been published earlier under a different name? As I listen to this novel it sounded so familiar and I was always one step ahead like I had heard it before.

Male narrator made ruined the book for me.
Revisado: 06-24-17
I love the novels by Yrsa Sigurdardottir so I was excited to listen to her latest novel. BUT the male narrator's style made it impossible to listen; so bad that I had to return the novel. His intonation was so flat and without inflection or any energy (emotional or breath support-wise) that I found it physically unnerving. His narration was made even worse by its contrast to the female narrator who was very good. Think I will read novel with my own eyes.
