This story is okay. Immigrants from Norway creating their American dream. I’m to Chapter 11 and want to scream every time the son name Leif is pronounced as “leaf” on a tree. I expect the Norwegian name spelled Leif would be pronounced as “lay f”. Sorry I’m not a grammar expert, but this name pronunciation is driving me crazy. Hopefully I’ll finish the book. Argh!

Susan Meissner has become a new favorite author. The story flows well. Along with a good listen, take time to listen to good writing. A well written novel invigorates and adds so much to a good book. Thank you Susan Meissner.

Historia
When Olivia Shaw’s mother dies, the sophisticated food editor is astonished to learn she’s inherited a centuries-old English estate—and a title to go with it. Raw with grief and reeling from the knowledge that her reserved mother hid something so momentous, Olivia leaves San Francisco and crosses the pond to unravel the mystery of a lifetime. One glance at the breathtaking Rosemere Priory and Olivia understands why the manor, magnificent even in disrepair, was the subject of her mother’s exquisite paintings. What she doesn’t understand is why her mother never mentioned it.

From San Francisco life as a cooking editor to an unknown English estate discovered after her mother’s death. Why did the English side of the family remain a secret all of her life? Why had her mother not shared any of this with her? A trip to England was her starting point. Loved the story!

Well Written
Revisado: 01-31-23
A great journey into the early days of WWII, an American GI, and a lovely German Jew who immigrated to England with false papers. I really enjoyed the story. Unexplored bombs during the blitz were rendered “dead” by brave soldiers and many sections of the book are devoted to that, but interesting with many facts.

East Germany, West Germany and the Cold War. Along with a great story, I enjoyed the brief facts that were scattered within the book about the Berlin Wall. Starting with barbed wire, concrete fence up to 11 feet high, and the Soviets tightening of security between East and West. These were years I was alive. What freedoms we have in America.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Revisado: 01-08-23
Kudos to the author for the extensive research included in this book. Details from his childhood, early school years, war experiences and on until Churchill’s death. What a monumental task to get a life chronicled with so much specific detail. If you’re a history nut this book gives great insights into the life of a great man.

Historia
When a rainmaker is bludgeoned to death in the pitch-blackness of a colossal dust storm, small-town sheriff Temple Jennings shoulders yet another burden in the hard times of the 1930s Dust Bowl. The killing only magnifies Temple's ongoing troubles: a formidable opponent in the upcoming election, the repugnant burden of enforcing farm foreclosures, and his wife's lingering grief over the loss of their eight-year-old son. As the sheriff and his young deputy investigate the murder, their suspicions focus on a teenager, Carmine, serving with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

From start to finish I was hooked. Great story telling of loosely based historical fiction. Ireland, England and Australia bring characters together in an intriguing saga. I was never bored.
