Historia
Dan Savage eviscerates the right-wing conservatives as he commits each of the Seven Deadly Sins himself (or tries to) and finds those everyday Americans who take particular delight in their sinful pursuits. Combine a unique history of the Seven Deadly Sins, a new interpretation of the biblical stories of Sodom and Gomorrah, and enough Bill Bennett, Robert Bork, Pat Buchanan, Dr. Laura, and Bill O'Reilly bashing to more than make up for their incessant carping, and you've got the most provocative book of the fall.

if you aren't familiar with Dan Savage from his pod-cast, SavageLove, you don't have to go subscribe. This book gives a tour through the idea that America is better when we are all free to pursue what makes us happy, thematically arranged by each of the deadly sins.

Historia
The liberal arts educational system is under attack. Governors in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina have announced that they will not spend taxpayer money subsidizing the liberal arts. Majors like English and history - which were once very popular and highly respected - are in steep decline, and President Obama has recently advised students to keep in mind that technical training could be more valuable than a degree in art history when deciding on an educational path.

Well Worth a Listen
Revisado: 03-06-17
This was a solid treatment of the benefits of a broad education. I work with pre-teaching majors, though I have a liberal arts degree, and this gave me some insight about how to help students understand the differences between these types of degrees.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Historia
The Tower of London is one of the most historic sites in all of England and still one of the most popular. All around is the modern city of London, one of the world's most prosperous and power financial districts, but the Tower is still a daunting structure that looms across the landscape. Not a single structure but a vast network of medieval and early modern fortifications, it anchors the southeastern end of the old city and controls access to the River Thames and, through it, London's connection to the sea.

Revisado: 05-20-15
What disappointed you about The Tower of London?
I actually thought the reader was JOKING with a contrived accent that is . . . just bizarre. The performance was SO BAD, how could I attend to ANYTHING else?
Has The Tower of London turned you off from other books in this genre?
I love tour guides and non-fiction . . . so this was just aberrant.
How could the performance have been better?
ANY other reader would have been a necessary first step.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was just very confused.

Historia
Organized as a travel guide for the time-hopping tourist, The Time-Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England is an entertaining popular history with a twist. Historian Ian Mortimer reveals in delightful (and occasionally disturbing) detail how the streets and homes of 16th century looked, sounded, and smelled for both peasants and for royals; what people wore and ate; how they were punished for crimes and treated for diseases; and the complex and contradictory Elizabethan attitudes toward violence, class, sex, and religion.

Best Book on this Topic
Revisado: 08-28-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have read LOTS of books on this subject and, frankly, didn't expect much from such a short book, but it has the MOST relevant and comprehensive description and plan of action for women involved with extremely difficult men. I assumed that I would find her other title, _Self-Centered and Narcissistic Men_, but this was the one that shed NEW LIGHT on a situation I have been tirelessly researching for several years.
Any additional comments?
I tried these titles because they were inexpensive, but I didn't expect much. I was VERY pleasantly surprised & intend to buy others.
